If you shoot aluminum arrows you can buy a small metal detector that mounts on a arrow. They work OK at best. I usually try to set up a backstop of hay bales of something to minimize arrow loss. it defintely is very easy to lose arrows that's for sure. Good luck, Kris.

2 sheet's of plywood, or osb will make a 8'x8' back-stop, if you miss that then maybe archery is not for you, My neighbor complained when my wife shot a couple arrow's into her yard... so we went with the 8'x8' & havent had problem since. Also start up close ...say 10 to 15 yard's, & only work your way back when you can consistantly hit your target. A metal detector will find lost arrow's, even Carbon, with metal field point's.

I second that start close and work your way back your first few weeks are going to be working on form and follow though. Once you can hit the 6 inch bulls eye every time or you start to stack arrows and you can hit where you want take a couple of steps back. If your sighted in and are missing because of your release close the distance. I shoot fingers but some thing that helps me is to stand about 10 or 5 yards from the target close your eyes and relax and smoothly let go where you hit the target doesn't matter but what your working on is to get a constant release every time.

Some people use wraps to make their arrows more visible in the brush. I fletch my arrows with either one or two white vanes both for visibility if I lose the arrow and so I can tell what kind of blood I have if I hit an animal.

You might also take your bow to a pro-shop or a more experienced archer and make sure it is tuned right. Accuracy can be frustrating to achieve if your bow isn't set up right. Other than that, just like ehunter says, start close to minimize your misses, and move back as your accuracy improves. All that said though, your still going to lose an arrow now and then. Its just the cost of shooting. I baught a half dozen gold tips with my first bow and lost all but one within a month. I also had a bad day a couple of weeks ago and lost three arrows within a half hour, even though I rarely miss the target these days. Bad days are a fact of life in archery.
