Default Hepner Unit?

I got on with my Uncle's hunting party this year and we drew spike tags in Hepner. I guess they hunt not too far west of Ukiah. Has anybody hunted this area? I have not been there, but I've heard lots of stories.

Was there just camping and scouting in late winter/early spring a couple years ago. Saw quite a few deer. One herd of close to 20, which is a lot for a coast range boy. Didn't find any elk, but I wasn't in the right place for them either. I'm sure they are out there, it's good looking country.

It like hunt down town portland. alot of people. wear your flack jacket. just fun'n Pray for a snow the day after you get there. snows to early the elk will haved moved, snows late your ok. The animals get so much presure through all the seasons there. The spots away from all the people are the best. your road closures are good but even in there away from the roads. Scout a coulpe days before season is best, good luck ex heppner local.

The area from Madison creek all the way down to Sugarbowl has produced a lot of elk. When the hunters start to pressure them these areas seem to produce. The Texas butte road closure is usually good for the opening but the horseback hunters push them into private land on Rhea creek early on. Lots of elk in that unit and a good scouting trip is wise.

It is where I archery elk hunt. It is my favorite place to be. But whatever you do, don't go! There are no elk.
