Default Confusion about the Columbia and Salmon Jumping

We fished on Saturday in the Columbia for sturgeon and all around our boat big salmon were jumping but no one was fishing for them. We figured the season wasn't open, but then later someone said that it is open, it's some kind of late spring, or actual summer run, but not even the guides fish for them as they don't bite? What is going on? We had huge salmon jumping near the boat. Are they in season, or just not worth catching?
We did catch sturgeon!

Thanks in Advance for any answers to my confusion.

They are open, but a closure is eminent (probably by Saturday) due to impacts. They do fish for them quite a bit from Cathlamet up to Troutdale (maybe other places, I don't know). Most guys use spinners or Alvin-type wobblers depending on the current. Depth depends on temperature (right now, about 25' seems to work, but later in the summer guys do well at 40-50' like the fall fish).

In season, worth catching and they do bite well.

The big ones are summer run fish. Springers tend to be smaller fish. If you know where they are, GO GET EM QUICK.
Looks like they will close the Columbia soon.
Good Luck,
Bob

If these jumpers were in the estuary, remember that from buoy 10 up to tongue point is closed for all salmon fishing right now, and won't open until Aug. 1st. Tounge Point and upriver is currently open.
