Willamette Steelhead
Well,
All my hours and a lot of released native silvers finally paid off for me on Friday (The day after Thanksgiving). I boated a beautiful 12 Lb hatchery hen Steelhead on the Willamette. Did not see any other fish taken all day. Had two other take downs that we missed, probably native silvers. It sure was nice to catch my first winter steelhead of the year. She still had a bunch of sea lice on her.

Tanner
I was on the river the same day and saw no action in the 3 hours I hung around. Son got tired of playing in the tackle box and then it was time to go. What does your boat look like? I will say hello next time I am in the area.

Big Red Alumaweld Formula V (Kinda Scratched up a bit) inboard with a Full Top and Side Curtains and a funky mounting plate on the bow for an electric motor. I usually always have my youngest son with me too. You can't miss him. 9 years old 150 lbs size 8 mens shoe. We call him the bulldozer.

What does your boat look like? Where were you fishing? I pretty much stay along the Island. If it is slow I will go up and forward troll the Garbage Hole, but I hook alot of steelhead along the Island this time of year. I hope the river stays in shape. When the smaller rivers become fishable it takes a lot of pressure off of the Willamette.

Re: Willamette Steelhead
I saw you on the water. I left not much after you showed up in the hole I was fishing about 11:30. I didnt see any ifish stickers on the boat, or I would have said hello. Funny how I keep looking for them but have never seen one yet.
I will be sure and hide my lunch before I say hello, so your son dont take it away from me. Sounds like a big boy.
Edit
didnt see your last post until after I posted this one. I was in an 18 ft Duckworth with black top, Yamaha Outboard. I was in the tailout of the garbage hole most of the time. I did run up by the falls for about 1/2 hour.

Re: Willamette Steelhead
I am certainly glad that you two take your kids fishing. It's good family time together, and it will give them an appreciation when they are older of the importance of the environment. I love to go fishing with my kids! It's too bad that they're not old enough to drink beer with me yet too!

I try to take my son as much as possible. His attention span does not allow for a 5 or 6 hour drift boat trip, but I can make short trips in the sled that allow a quick trip back to the dock when his meter runs out. He just turned 3 in July. We spent his first and second birthday at Marion Lake trout fishing. Had to carry him in and out (3 miles each way), but it was worth it. We missed his 3rd birthday because it fell on a work day. The day after his first birthday we were at Pamelia Lake. Marion Lake is my favorite lake to trout fish, sure is getting crowded now days. Nothing to see 70 or so cars at the trail head in the summer. I have seen where you fish with your kids for trout a lot on the BB. I am hoping next summer we can get some high lakes trout fishing in. My 11 month daughter likes to crawl around and put stuff in her mouth yet so she only goes when mom can come along. My son made it from daylight to 1pm on Tillamook bay with this fall. I was probably the only boat on the bay with legos on the floor, but he was there. Nothing like shad fishing with the kids. Has to be the best opportunity for action when they are running. Son would rather net them than reel them in though. Wont be to much longer and he will be fishing for real. I really look forward to it.

Re: Willamette Steelhead
I really miss taking my kids fishing. While stationed at Ft. Lewis I took my first son steelhead fishing on the Kalama when he was 10 days old. I had days off durring the week so it was just me and the retired guys around. I had this nice back pack that he just loved. I had to stop every hour or so to feed and change. It was great. The old guys on the river were always asking for their turn to sit on the bank and hold him in the sun. I think they enjoyed it more than me. Due to divorce, I dont get to see them as often as I would like as they live back east, but I do cherish the memories!! Keep taking those kids as often as possible and enjoy the time lyou get to spend.
Tight Lines!!

Re: Willamette Steelhead
Yeah, BOE, 3 year olds do have a very short attention span. They don't really start to get into it until they are around 6, and then the fish had better be biting. My second son caught his first fish when he was 18 months old. His brother had lost interest, and wasn't attending his rod, so Alex picked it up and started walking off with it. Lo and behold, there was a two inch long bluegill at the end of the line! Unfortunately, they don't like to fish from the boat. I don't know why. I think they feel restricted in the boat. They always want to fish from the bank. My four year old is a hoot. When she was three, she hooked a very large trout, and set her rod down to tell me.... I got to it just in time to keep the rod from going in. She had trouble reeling it in and holding the rod up, so I put my hand under the rod to help her hold it up. She got it in! 20 inch trout.
When they get older, BOE, they're gonna get mad if you go without them!
