Elk - Peaches Ridge.
Deer - Taneum

Is there a place you can see how many points you have?

I've probably got 3-4 for Elk and 5-6 for Deer.

Yeah, go here: http://wdfw.wa.gov/cgi-bin/shp_tmp/permit.cgi

Put in your WILD Number and it'll show what you applied for and how many points you have. Well, actually the points it shows is what you will have after the drawing, if you are unsuccessful. So for points going into this year's drawing, you need to subtract 1 from the number of points it shows.

Washington Hunter, i called the Game department last year and they stated that the points shown are your points... Because you do not start with 0 you always start with 1. But who really knows. I think the system is totally screwed up anyways...4000 people puting in for 22 tags... 11000 people puting in for 22 moose permits... I can't wait for my son to pass hunters safety, maybe he will get a moose in his lifetime in this state. I didn't start hunting untill late in high school and then went off to the military and missed a few years so i missed out on some points in there.

I just put in for points this year. Will hunt deer and elk in SW WA. Just need to keep track of the elk I have been watching so far this year and hopefully be able to find them once the season rolls around.

Big Tule, Don,t get down about the number of points it takes. Somebody has to get drawn. Stay positive! Have been drawn twice for Margaret over the years with no more than 6 points each time.

I am not down... The way they explained it to me is that When you put in your initial permit application you get 1 point... That is why if you drew last year you would have 1 this year. Because nobody has zero, as they explained it to me.
And that is why it says current points total when you look at your preferences.
Not trying to argue i am just stating what the region 5 office told me.
My father in law and 2 others drew toutle with 4 points in 2001. There are 9 of us and 2001 was the last time anybody was drawn. I havn't been drawn since 1994 for a lewis river cow tag.
I think the system worked better before 1996. if you put in for tags you couldn't hunt untill wednesday, and if you drew you couldn't reapply for 2 years. I know of a person 4 years ago who drew margaret in back to back years...
I will get drawn and i know where my big bull is. The only reason i am rifle hunting this year is because of school, i will be in school during the early season.

Big Tule, you are correct. THis should answer all questions:
Q: How do I build up points?
A: Each person who applies for a special hunt permit for a species receives a point for applying. If that person is not awarded a special hunt permit during that drawing the point is retained. If the person is awarded the permit, that person's point total drops to zero. If the person who was not awarded a permit for that species applies the next year, they then have two points. A single point is built up each year the person applies for a species until the person is awarded a permit.

Q: What is the value of building up points?
A: Building up points is very much like putting more application cards into the barrel. Those that have more cards in the barrel have an advantage over those that have less. The more points a person has built up for a species over time, the greater are the chances that his/hers will be selected.

Q: I heard that the points have multipliers on them. What is that for?
A: Some permit drawing systems are designed so that one random number is issued for each point built up for the species by the applicant. It is the same as having one card in the barrel for each point (one point - one card, two points - two cards, etc.).

Washington's system places a multiplier on the points. The number of points is squared and it is this number of random numbers that are issued to the application (or number of cards in the barrel). If a person applies for an elk permit for the first time, they have one card in the barrel. If a person has built up two points, they have four cards in the barrel. If a person has three points built up, nine cards are in the barrel and so on.

Placing a multiplier on the points more noticeably increases the chances of being selected over someone who is a new applicant or was recently awarded a permit as points are built up.

The Multiplier system really starts snowballing for the guys with 7 or more points. I still don't understand how some people are drawing their 4th choice on tags that have more people applying for the tag as their first choice.
