Default Black tail horns

After looking at all of the recent shed hunting pictures I got to thinking about some blacktailed bucks I've harvested over the years and what they might score. I recently contacted osulogger and asked him if he would be willing to score my horns if he had time. Well he kindly agreed to help me when he has some time, thanks osulogger! In the mean time I thought it might be fun to see what some of you think they might score before he actually measures them.

Tough to give you a score with nothing there for reference--the mass on that first one is damned impressive though. I had a shed stolen out of the back of my truck from a buck out of Mollalla that looked similar to that and I think I figured that buck would score mid 140's.

Double drop tine Blacktail--never seen one. Absolutely awesome. Could not tell what that would score but I would dang sure have shot him

127-131 for the 3rd buck

136-142 for the 4th buck

Thanks for taking the time to come up with antler scores. I know it must be very tought to come up with a score from photos. I'm just curious of what people think before they get measured.

Every one of them is a B&C buck. Give us some tips - please. I don't think I have seen that many Blacktails west side alive that nice - not true but dang close.

I don't know the scores, but they are all very impressive. I think the second one is my favorite, because, like Crayfin says, I've never seen that before.

Bill,

Those are all "extra fine" Bucks. I was raised on the coast and you just don't see bucks of that caliber very often, if ever. I'm wondering why no shoulder mounts? Any of those four would be mounts to be proud of.
As for the scoring, I'm no official scorer but I believe the scores given by Crayfin are very close to the mark. I'm thinking Buck #4 is your top scorer at just under 150 gross, beating out buck #3 due to its weak G2's & G3's.

However, Buck #1 is a real sleeper and very impressive. He appears to lack width from the angle of the photo, but maybe not? And my goodness look at that mass! If this Buck is 18" wide I think he is your top scorer, but I don't believe he is. I'm thinking he is pressing 140 gross.

Of the four Buck, I'd take Buck #1 in a heartbeat over the others. Score and width aren't everthing, and mass gets Bucks killed in front of me. What an exceptional Buck!

Thanks for listing your pics. I'd love to chat sometime, drop me a email. Take care.

Are those cascade blacktail or Coastal blacktail? If I had to guess, I would say that they came from the upper Santiam system.

Picture #3 scored 118

Picture #4 scored 123

A BIG thanks goes out to Osulogger for taking the time to score my horns. It was a pleasure meeting you and we'll get together soon and do some looking around.

These deer were all coastal bucks and not to far from your location.

What an impressive set of antlers. All of them, I mean.

I saw a buck that looked like the drop tine buck in the hood unit a few years back (long story) no shot fired.
It was most likely a benchleg buck though..

I am surprised the 1st buck scored the highest. I see the mass, but maybe it is just the picture or I didn't look at it long enough, but there looks to be deductions and not tremendous length. It is probably the angle of the photo. I had fun trying to score it with the wierd angle.

Maybe we should start a game with prizes.. Someone puts up a pic and everyone guesses the score. It has to be an already officially scored buck and the picture you could do a cool angle like in this picture...

The first buck scored the most because I scored it as a non-typical. If it weren't for that, the buck would score around 108. The mass is what definitely helped that rack get the points though. Some of the H measurements were 6" and over.... I believe it had somewhere near 17" of deduction though.

Hogwild, the pleasure was mine to help you out. You definitely have some beautiful trophies and I look forward to our future encounters!

The angle for the picture was not the best for trying to score, my bad. Osulogger scored the first one as a nontypical.

The horn scoring game sounds like a great and fun idea. I'm sure some of the guys/gals on here have some great horns to score.

These were taken several years ago. Since that time I've seen a few bucks that are about the same size and two that were MUCH larger. One of the 2 larger bucks still haunts me because I got a very good look at him after I harvested the 4x4 he was running with but that's another story.
