The bulls will bugle anytime they feel like doin it, but for tearing up stuff, I don't think they would be doing that to their antlers right know since they are in the growth stages. Their antlers are in full velvet and growing everyday.

Couple of years ago we saw three mature bulls early in the morning. They were more like cattle unafraid. Oneof them dropped his head and shook it at us and then started bucking and passing gas really loud I was dying laughing at his antics

Sometimes younger bulls may be feeling pretty good about their new headgear and be "practicing for the rut". As far a tearing stuff up,??? My last trail cam pics, i got to the camera and their was about 5 -6 new gauges in the tree that it is fastened to, had pics of a bull up close peeking in, so their horns must be alot harder than I thought to leave the marks even though they are in full velvet. This is also the coast range. OH , BY THE WAY, ( Coast range elk hunting sucks)lol.

Could it be they were peeling bark with their teeth??? They do this more than you think.

Rank- I suppose maybe so. It didn't appear to be though. I should have taken a pic because I was amazed myself that they were hard enough to leave the marks. I will take a pic in two weeks when I return, of course they wont appear as fresh as before.

This is the best time of the year for to see bulls they tend to stay in the open deer for that matter too? It is really too early to be rubbing?? The young bulls like to hear their voice like a teenager. I agree they love the bark on alders so maybe they were nipping at the tree.
