Default Smith River of Cal.

I've done a search and come up with little at ifish.
I am interested in a guide on the Smith River of Cal. Planning a trip the week of Feb.15. Any contact information or information in general to shorten the learning curve would be great. Its either that or go back to Forks but want to soak it in new water.

out.

I don't know if it is the same river, but there is a Smith river on the Klamath River hwy. We pass by it every year when we visit my mom's aunt. It looks pretty small to me. There is alot of gold panning and dredging that goes on down there. If it is the same river you want to fish I can probalbly call and get any info you need.

The CA Smith river is just south of the Chetco, just 11 miles south of the OR the border. There is also a different Smith River in OR.

The best tackle shop is "Lunker Fish Trips
Mick Thomas" 707-458-4704 and they can put you onto guides. There is a core group that all do about the same and Ive never had a bad trip with one.

They are located in Hiouchi which is right where the best fishing is

Couple of places to stay nearby, The Hiouchi Motel 707-458-3041 which is cheap but clean and the Ship-a-Shore motel in Smith River which is a Best Western -- also has an ok place to eat dinner.

The Smith has been pumping out some 20+lb fish recently. Mid Feb can be good if the weather accomodates.

I can give you more info if you wnat to PM me.

The Smith is a venerable steelhead and salmon river.

There was a great article in Northwest Flyfishing one of the last two quarters, I think the most recent issue. They talk a lot about the different arms of the river, best times, maps, guides, etc.

Good lick, it's an amazing stream.

Lured in, You are right, his name is Armond Castagna, check the Salmon-Trout-Steelheader Feb-Mar. 02 the article is "Side Drifting".

I have fished the Smith and it is awsome under those big redwoods. I fished with Guide Albert Kutskie. Albert is a worker on the oars and got us into fish.

 Holehog,
Yes the Smith is a dandy river, however wkends are crazy there! Beware! Lots of Sacramento Valley, SF Bay folks drive for 2-3 days fishun. It's worth a call to Tony the owner @ Sporthaven Marina in Brookings at the border. I think he still books guides and is in the 'Know" daily. Good guy too. 800.421.4249. Good Luck!

I fished the Smith 2 of the last 3 weekends. 3 fish day 3 weeks ago and last weekend just 1.

Call the Lunker guy. He also runs a shuttle service.

All the guides in the area are hooked up with him for shuttling.

His store is about a 1/4 mile East of the Hiouchi store on the same side of 199.

Last weekend a guide was in front of us at the Lunker Tackle shop and reported that the day before he had fished a guy from out of state that had never fished before. To make a long story short the dude landed a 25lb Steelhead.
First fish he ever caught.

I can not find his contact information but J.D Richey is an awesome guide I know him more from central california steelhead fishing on the American and yuba but he also fishes the smith and other n.ca rivers. I know he has a web page that he updates all the time so that might be the best way to find him
