Default Sturgeon Fisherman Take Care

For those of you that will be venturing out in the next few days keep a keen eye upstream

Logs, root wads, docks, ect... can take your boat down very quickly if they run up on your anchor line. Have a sharp serreated (sp ) knife handy if you have to cut your line. Last year there were several instances where I had to drop off to let LARGE logs run over my anchor line... in fact I think that's the way I got to know TackleBuster real well... same log got both our anchor lines after we dropped off to avoid it

Keep a sharp eye while underway, remember dead heads can just be showing very little but you dont want to hit one with your prop... makes me worry now that I have them :depressed:

Be safe and dont out there and you should have a great outing with the sturg on the prowl

This is my favorite boat knife for anchor rope, sardine wraps for SPRINGERS . It is the best knife I have owned for the boat. I have three of them in it; Safety First  . Dexter S 151SC-GWE It has a 4" serrated blade that stays sharp

Last year I got my boat in December and then targeted Sturgeon in January/Feb. Here is what I learned:

1) No matter how strong you think you are, there is no way to push a 40' log in current off your float.

2) A knife is great, but so is throwing your anchor rope. After getting set, zip tie the extra rope and keep your eyes open. If a log approaches, throw it well before it gets even close to you. A $100 anchor system, or a 25K boat... you decide.

3) Anchor below the first line at Kelly Point, let someone else worry about what is coming and stay inside them. If it's big someone will always yell.

4) Trim your motor up as much as you can to still keep power. Minimize the amount of engine you have under water just in case.

5) Wear your lifejacket from the second you step on the dock, until you have trailered your boat. Strange things can and do happen. My wife lets me fish whenever I want, and I am not going to reward her and my kids with an accidental death. Go to Fisherman's, get a life jacket you can live with and then wear it always.

Good luck out there.

I'd like to put in a plug for wearing the serated knife. I have mine attatched to my inflatable life-vest. A 40 pound anchor can hold a boat in current, but with very little effort you can get a loop of line around your ankle and the same anchor can hold YOU in the current, too. If you wear the knife, you'll get used to having it in the same spot all the time and will be able to grab it without having to search for it.

Pete,

Good point, wear one knife and mount another close to where your anchor rope is tied off.

Any reports on how much debris is floating down the Columbia today? I was considering sturgeon fishing by boat tomorrow. Thanks.

Hey Salmon Loser,

There is always one or two outfits at the Sprotsmans show that have a good supply on Dexter knives. I am going to look for one there this year, looks like a good knife to have around.
