Default Fishing the bank

For those of us not real fond of being on the water. Where are some good bank access place on the Sandy to fish. I usually fish the coast hard for winters but until they come in I am thinking about taking the wife with me Thanksgiving morning so she can play. I was thinking of starting low. Anyone have some suggestions where to fish with somewhat easy access between now and the end of Dec.?

Park at the Hatchery. Follow the dirt road into the woods. Turn right at the T, through the yellow gate. Winds you down to the river. Head down river. Fish after you cross the second creek. Good luck.

You will NOT want to fish the hatchery as that is up to high(river mile 22).If you are thinking low, start at Dabney State Park(river mile 6) or the park just up from I-84(Lewis and Clark Park -river mile 3).There is a lot of water in those two parks, but a lot inbetween also without major hiking from the car(Crown Point Hwy. Follows the river from I-84 up to Dabney)
With the water low it may be a great time to familirize your self with the river for later trips. Bring a note pad to make notes,if your like me the "grey matter " doesn't retain things like it use to.
Also if you drop by GI Joes or Fisherman's Marine check out the Maps they have for the Sandy. Amato Publications produced the map that I have and it is invaluable,I also have a Wilson -Trask one. They show good holes and access and really add to the fishing experience.I write on mine, to remind me of Good holes, when visited, ect.
In short, work that lower water at the two parks or inbetween.
Other spots but probably a bit(two-three weeks) too far up would be Oxbow Park(magificent amount of water and beautiful-river mile 10 to 13).And still farther up Dodge Park(river mile 18.5).
What ever you do enjoy and dress warm!

Oxbow park would be a good bet.Lot's of bank access and it's still fairly low on the river. You have to pay $3 to get in the park.

Penn,
Glad to share some of my old fishing haunts on the lower Sandy with ya. Lewis and Clark State Park just above I84 is a good place to start. You can park along side the on-ramp to I84 and hike to some good access below the I84 bridge. This area has a population of regular plunkers but there is always room. Look for good water not just good access here. Right across from the above mentioned park is some fishable water given the right water conditions. This is transition water not holding water. Moving up stream you can fish some good bobber water just below the Troutdale bridge. Also, cross over the bridge and park in Glen Otto Park by Jack's place. Walk down to the river and then go upstream a ways and you'll come to some good water across from Tad's Restaurant. This water is all in the park and worth fishing. Bobbers, drifting and side planers all will produce results given the right water conditions and of course fish. Be sure to stop by Jacks to get bait and catch reports on how the plunkers are doing on the lower section I mentioned earlier. This is a good indication of whats to come. Moving further upstream there is a fair drift below the Stark street bridge. Dabney Park is just above the bridge but I have never cared much for this section of water. Oxbow park and the scout camp offer good access further upstream. The scout camp access is at the bottom of the hill before you enter the park, walk through the gate and it's a short walk to some very good drifts. Oxbow is near and dear to my heart and I look forward to fishing this section of river every year and renewing old friendships - howdy Eli, Frank, Larry and Jim If your out there - even though the fishing has been poor since '91. The "Log Jamb", "Hozzinger", "boat ramp" and "Nude beach" holes and drifts all produce fish. Hope this bit of info helps you. I would usually look to fish this section of river starting around mid December with river levels from 9.0 to 11 feet. These are some of the more well worked spots. There a some "reel" honey spots that I'll let you discover. I've enjoyed traveling upstream with ya and reliving the old days on the Sandy. Enjoy!

Howdy RT, I'm back. Spent the last week catching up on the board. Seems like some things never change. Glad to see you are still hanging in there.

dfb.

I will be fishing the Sandy Thanksgiving morning and i will be at my usual spot between the the raiload bridge and I-84 bridge. I usually plunk in this stretch but there is lots of area to drift fish. Hopefully the wind will not be blowing too hard. There is LOTS of easy access here.
