Default More questions about Kwikfish

Do the regs require pinching the barbs on trebles and siwash on kwikfish and does it make a difference with or without rattles. I noticed Cabellas' has both.

Most of the ones available around here have the rattle. They work, I used to think that if the water was pretty clear you should not use a rattle. But that proved to be wrong last year. You don't have to pinch barbs, but if you want to release ALL your fish, it is a good idea. As far as I know, it is not required by law.

Wait until you see the new Gami hooks made for Kwikfish. Kind of weird looking with the barb on the outside.

I got a few samples last year of a Gami hook called "Assist 510". I loved them, but I can't find any more. They are available in 1/0 to 4/0 with a 130lb braided nylon loop to attach them to the lure. All you would do is remove the original hook and snap ring, then slip the loop through the eye and pull the hook through. It left the hook trailing about 3/4" behind the plug (just like many of the posts on adding bead chains or barrel swivels). I will bug FMS this week to see if they can order them. If anyone else sees them, please let me know.

Thanks for the info, I will order some rattlers and it looks like a little experimenting with the hooks is in order.

I got a sample of those new Kwikfish hooks today and was going to post a pic but I had cammera problems. I'll try tomorrow.

They look like a circle hook with the barb on the outside of the hook. I think they may work well.

For the record, that hook was NOT designed specifically for Kwikfish, but instead for attaching a "stinger" to the head end of a solid lead jig.

In any case, the idea of using it for Kwikfish sounds like pure genius. Dave, you'll have to post a pic with several sizes of Kwikfish with different size hooks. Interested to see how it looks as a stand-alone hook either from just the belly or just the tail screw-eye. It may not have enough length to be effective as a stand-alone hook from the belly. The Gamakatsu website says the strength of the loop material depends on hook size.

Thanks Fastwater, interesting tip there.

Man, I think we need a whole chapter in the Ifish archives on K-fish rigging tips & tricks, perhaps then Jennie could compile it into her next, bestselling book?

Here's a poor pic of that new Kwikfish hook from Gamakatsu.

It's kind of a circle hook and the barb is interestingly on the outside of the hook.

It has an open eye so it can be crimped onto a swivil.

I hard that on a test in Alaska it caught something like 43 out of 44 hook-ups.

I've fished circle hooks for halibut and one thing for sure, you don't want to set the hook, just lift up and start reeling on it. This hook may act the same way.

Might have to just sit back and let the fish take off and hook it's self (should be doing that anyway)

One of the things I do myself is take braided line and make my own set up for hooking trebles to my kwikfish I like to slide my rear hook back a little further than most people and this is a easy way to do it I was amassed at how my drive by hook ups increased with this method it is really easy! Take a piece of 80# braided line and double it thru the eye on the rear of your kwikfish then just slide your hook on the other end, I just use a regular improved clinch knot to the hook of choice and the great thing is I can very the length of my trailer hook to where I want it to lay I also like this because for Natives I can usually just cut the rear hook off for quick easy release no muse no fuss!!PEACE1

Dave

How about posting a pic of a Kwikfish or two rigged with one of those new hooks in your last post. The Gamakatsu website only shows the ones with the braided loop attached... are they selling them in a stand-alone open-eye version like the old standby siwash?

I can see eliminating the forward hook on the 13s' and maybe 14s', but should'nt the forward hooks be kept with the 15s' and 16s'????? I know it's common to delete the forward hooks on many plugs and am considering doing so with all my 13s' and 14s'. I also like the idea of having the braided line on the trailing hook for its flexability . I think as a single hook on the rear, the treble may be my choice versus the siwash. Russ
