How to move a refrigerator?
I am buying a used refrigerator and need to know how to move it. I have heard that newer refrigerators(this one is 4 years old) do not need to be upright while being moved, as long as they sit upright for a day before being plugged in. It would be a lot easier to lay the frig down in my truck, versus standing up. Can anyone help?

Re: How to move a refrigerator?
My understanding is that if you have the time and space to leave it upright for a day or so, you can move a fridge laying down. Standing it up is always better, but I've never had a problem if I let it sit for a day before plugging it in.

Re: How to move a refrigerator?
Sentimental poems often move refrigerators.....
I moved an older freezer laying on its side with no problems. It works fine.

Re: How to move a refrigerator?
They are not that heavy in reality, 150-200 lbs. The pro's strap it to their waists/shoulders between two guys, suspended in the middle between the two of them.Just had a new one delivered. I removed the old one myself, down stairs, down the sidewalk and into the back of a pickup

Re: How to move a refrigerator?
I am not worried about the weight of the frig. I have a handtruck. I am just worried about it falling over in the back of my truck.

Re: How to move a refrigerator?
Lay it down then. Just set it back upright for a day before you plug it in, so the oil gets back into the compressor before you run it.

Can you get some adjustable tie-downs and secure it? That's what I did.

Re: How to move a refrigerator?
Last one I moved, I put a tie down over the top and one around the front and had NO problem. You could even stack a few things around it to make it more solid.

Re: How to move a refrigerator?
fishstix, Just some words of caution on this frig and info that might help. So I used to deliver frig's for a well known company, one of the training items was that we never lay the frig down!!! This is cause a capalary tube up towards the top of the frig can get filled with oil from the compressor and cause the compressor to over heat and then the frig dosen't work no more. I even asked some of the service personal that repaired frig's about it and they confirmed that this was the case. That being said I have moved frigs standing up and that includes freezers.
Now I know that alot of people say it is ok to lay it down and to let it sit for 24 hours you might get away with it as most people have indicated here.
However if you do lay the frig down and it happens to get any oil in that capalary tube, well then even letting it sit for 24 hours won't prevent the compressor from going out!! Yes it may last for several days even a year who knows but it can and most likely shroten the frigs life.
also if it is a new frig and they see that you lay it down it may void the warrenty!!! Just some food for thought
good luck

Re: How to move a refrigerator?
check with the manufacturer... I had a fridge as old as 1994 and it did not require special treatment of laying down.. I was concerned and checked with them and the shipping information and they confirmed the packing information was correct. When in doubt keep it upright, or check with the mfg..
