Thanksgiving trout?
Spending next weekend near Sunriver with my folks, they live a stones throw from the 'Chutes. How is the fishing up there? Fly or otherwise? Lava, Crane, Wickiup, Davis? Might as well throw a line at something while I'm down there. Thanks.

Re: Thanksgiving trout?
Big Willie -
I haven't heard anything about how the lakes are fishing up there but with the cold weather they've been having, I bet some already have ice.
If you're down with stream fishing, try the Crooked River below Prineville Res. I was up there last weekend and the fishing was incredible. I was nymphing about 12in. under an indicator and was getting hits about every 3 casts. Fished from 1-3 but the fishing was getting better as time went on. If you want more details, feel free to email me.
Mike H
Ps Dress warm.... the high temps aren't getting above 32!

Re: Thanksgiving trout?
Big Willie, first be sure the fishing regulations as several of the lakes you mention are now closed. You best source for information in the Sunriver area is at the Sunriver Fly shop. They are located in the small shoping center on the south side of the Sunriver road. My guess is that they will recommend fishing Fall River.

Re: Thanksgiving trout?
Evan - Nah, I was just catching little rainbows and whitefish. What the fish lacked in size, they made up for in their numbers and aggressivness. The Crooked is a great river for any begineer fly fisherman.

Re: Thanksgiving trout?
A good bet for the Sunriver area is Fall River. It is an absolutely beautiful area, especially in the snow. I think it is fly fishing only and only open from the hatchery up stream. You will need light gear (5x-7x) leaders due to the extreme clarity of the water. All of the times I have fished the river (only a couple) was during the winter and we found in full of fish--hatchery planters mostly. There were even some decent hatches happening mid-day, despite the frigin temps. Check with the fly shops in Bend for hatches, flies, etc. Let me know how you do.

Re: Thanksgiving trout?
Thanks everybody. I'll check the regs for sure. I was thinking they were open as long as you could get to them. (before ice-up) The Fall River sounds like a good bet. Tight lines.

This is the website for the fly shop in Sunriver. Click on reports and they give pretty good info on what hatches are happening for each stream or lake. If it is not up to date just call them.

Shouldn't that fat man with a beard be up North with the elves? My kids will be ticked if he doesn't show up in a month.

Re: Thanksgiving trout?
If you don't mind driving about an hour and a half (?) north of Sunriver, there are lots of biting steelhead around the Hwy. 26 Warm Springs Bridge over the lower Deschutes. In fact there are lots on big native redside 'bows along with the steelhead eager to fatten up on flies, and lures, from the bridge area all the way on down the river. - RT

Re: Thanksgiving trout?
I'll be up there too. If you see a fat guy with a beard wandering around with a fly rod, say "howdy."
Maybe it'll snow and I can ski-fish ... always wanted to do that.
