Sturgeon Challenge anchoring mishap
I had a close call during the Sturgeon Challenge last Saturday. I anchored 200 feet upstream, and further out in the river above another boat, that just happened to be Ifish member KGS. After setting the anchor and throwing the float in, I told my fishing partner (Greg) to let out some more rope so we could back down towards a hole I had seen on my fishfinder. This was Greg's first time anchoring, and he let out LOTS of rope. By the time I realized how much rope he had let out, now were were maybe 100 feet upstream from KGS. So I yelled up to Greg "pull us back up to the ball." Greg interepreted this to mean "pull up the anchor", which he proceeded to do, by hand, while we were anchored in over 50 feet of water. Of course only seconds after Greg pulled up the anchor, and before I had time to respond, we were drifting into KGS and his crew, who stayed calm and held out their hands to keep our boats from banging together. KGS's first words to me were: "You must be Waterfish?" Even in the face of a potential disaster, I couldn't help but comparing his response to Stanley and Livingstone when they met in Africa: "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" KGS had remembered my boat from the "Do you have an old boat?" thread. As KGS held our boats apart, I started up my engine and slowly pulled away. Now we went a little further upstream and anchored again. Not long after that I caught my first ever keeper (44"). What a day! Next time I am going to make sure that whomever is on my boat understands what I am saying. KGS and crew were a class act, and couldn't have been nicer in the face of what was happening. KGS, I hope to run into you again on the river, but next time, not literally!

Re: Sturgeon Challenge anchoring mishap
Not so much a mishap as it was a misunderstanding by your helper. Glad everything worked out. No matter who's in my boat...i usually just say..sit here and i'll let you know if i need any help..I prefer to do it all myself.

I'm glad things worked out. To many times you hear of this type of thing happening and heated words are exchanged. KGS in my book is a class act.
We all need to remind ourselves to be understanding when stuff like this happen. Ifisher are good folks.

Waterfish,
Cooler heads prevailed, and yes you were one also
Thanks for the kind words, I too had a new crew member on the anchor, he has been with us, but not running the puller. He has learned to be very observant and ask questions. I still had to walk him through the final step of getting the puller and anchor in the boat w/out too many scratches (need/want a Big Water roller). The Willy was good practice for him.
We'll be at it again Sat., silver Maxxum, see ya on the water.
Ifisher's are good group of people

Re: Sturgeon Challenge anchoring mishap
KGS, Adding my Big Water Marine anchor roller to my boat is one of the best improvements I've made to it. In addition to having an out of the way place to keep the anchor, it is always ready to drop, and when I pull it up, the anchor puller, float, and anchor all ride up on the roller and the anchor locks in. And the anchor never hits the boat when pulling it up. I've talked to a few people who've had other brands and switched to the Big Water Marine roller, and without exception they've all said it was an improvement.

Re: Sturgeon Challenge anchoring mishap
I had a similar incident last year during an ifish flotilla near Longview.
Same thing- miscommunication between me and my anchor guy, coupled with an anchor that was too small and the next thing you know I have my anchor rope in my prop.
I didn't come close to hitting anybody, and I got it untangled in about 15 seconds (thanks to years of practice with crab pot ropes) but I wasn't fast enough to keep STG Rule from recording the sorry spectacle with her digital camera for everyone else on the board to enjoy that night.
As if four boats full of ifishers hooting with unabashed glee wasn't bad enough.

What is the big water marine roller. Anything like the motion marine?

Re: Sturgeon Challenge anchoring mishap
Trap50, The Big Water Marine anchor roller is similar to the Motion Marine, and from what I've heard from people who've switched to the Big Water, it works better, especially for bringing the puller and float up and nesting the anchor. They have a web site, and last year they had a booth at the Sportsman's Show. They are made in Boring, Oregon. Maybe someone who has had both can explain the advantages in better detail.
