On the top edge of a drop off is a good structure to look for.

Halibut tend to like sand/gravel type flat bottoms neer structure. Drop off's, pinacles, reefs, they are all good to fish around if surrounded by sandy gravely bottom. Of course as with all fishing there are exceptions to the rule.

I try to look for Capt Kujo. He's hard to keep up with though.

It's a great day when I can get some sun & fish at the same time on Big Blue.
For all Depth Days there are areas that get targeted hard with a lot of boats and most of those boats will come in with their limits. A good thing to have is a variety of baits (herring, shad, squid, salmon bellies or carcas, or tuna bellies or carcas). I ussually cary at least 2 of the mentioned baits.
For the inside 40 fishery it helps if you can find a good gravel bottom. There is usually more fishing than catching.

Re: What to look for when halibut fishing?
I find most of my halibut in my buddie's freezer, and it only costs me a couple bucks to drive to his house.
