Shark attack
While fishing yesterday, Greenbuttskunk thought he had a whopper on when it started peeling line near the surface.
When it finally got to the boat, it was a partial fish.

I guess that's one way to remove an adipose fin.

Re: Shark attack
That's the shortest tuna I've ever seen! Isn't that one of these "nofins"? Very rare I hear.

Re: Shark attack
That's a black cod, or Sablefish. I normally get a 1-2 per trip, but this was my first one of the season out at the hill.
I dropped him into the boat and I think the poor guy was still not sure what hit him. I took him home and the kids got a kick out of it, but I don't think my wife did
Thanks for the pic Roy.

Re: Shark attack
TWB got one of those also. When I leaned over to net his fish I could see a small fish attached to the line. Then it got bigger and overall, it was about 5 foot long. The shark was hot on it's heels for a second bite right up to the boat.

Re: Shark attack
Too hard to tell if it was clipped or not. I'd let it go.

Re: Shark attack
Nice Pics. I guess I just hadn't thought much about sharks stealing all the food like. Kind of cool to see the food chain though, fish with small fish, get bigger fish, catch bigger fish, clean your drawers when you see the shark coming up for your dinner.

Re: Shark attack
I've heard of using herring, squid, tuna bellies and even octopus to catch halibut... but that's an awful large bait even for a 100+lb butt

Re: Shark attack
WTG,
Mine was a Mackerel. Came on a down rigger while chinook fishing. He could barely pop the release he was so small. Then half way in he began to fight like he was 5' long...!!! Shark grabbed him and took off, I just wanted my flasher back!
So, didn't have to tag him, besides, it was free fish day.

Re: Shark attack
I would have tied a trailing hook on old no-tail and thrown him back in (with a steel leader) caught the shark, teach him not to do that permanently. and get the other of your fish back!
