There were 52 people in the fish derby, there was about 20 to 25 boats out. By 9:00 or 9:30 about half were gone because of wind. At 11:00 I was the next to last to load my boat, winds were at about 25 to 30mph. Really tough getting your boat on the trailer by then. Not too many fish caught, 11 pounds won it and I was second with 5.2 pounds and lost another one that probably would have won it. The way the wind was I was happy to just get a fish. Even though it wasn't very big it was worth $126, I'll take it.

Well, we found McNary Friday evening after a uneventful trip down from Wenatchee for the new boat baptism!!! I picked up a 20' Intruder ('99)a couple of weeks, from a fellow ifisher. This was the inaugural trip, and seeing as the state closed the "upper Columbia" we had to travel to try to harass some summer runs.

We hit the water bright and squirly (about 8:30), after an evening at the finer drinking establishements of Umatilla/McNary. Right away we discovered frozen steering and throttle cables on the sportjet (they thawed after being in the water, anyone else experience this trend in cold weather?). So we used the kicker to start trolling immediately (thanks FNF). Looking at it now, I wish we could of got in the derby. We fished until 12:30, with 2 fish landed. We didn't feel bad at all, except for the darn wind (probably 30mph) made puttin' the boat on the trailer tricky!!!! The locals know when to bail apparently, as we were the last ones fishing. We had numerous other takedowns, so there must be a pile of fish around.

It was a fun trip, wish the weather would of been a little better though. Slept in today, watched some football, and decided we'd started '04 off ok, and the 9 degrees wasn't worth fishin in. Thanks for the info FNF, as well as to the other information posts that made this an easy fishing experience.

No problem Snit. Next year you need to fish this area earlier when the fish are not so rusty. These kind of conditions make it hard to fish. I like just wearing a light jacket to catch the steel. I have been posting reports about this area far longer then the newbies. Ya hearing that Kentucky Smolt catcher

FNF, hopefully next fall, I'll be trying your area some more. I fish the ironheads in August down by the Big White, so September will be a logical "migration" for us! Except that Astoria is so appealing in Sept too (my wife loves catching silvers in the 'chuck)! That damn hunting season gets in the way also...there's just not enough time (sigh)!

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helvetica">Hey FNF...

Go ahead and throw out those little smiley face comments....

If I need information about "YOUR" area, I know who I can trust without receiving a "Smiley Face" comment....

I get the feeling your one of these competitive types who really doesn't appreciate people who like to travel to a new place to have a good time ...

To everyone reading this...No, I am not an expert on this area but my buddy Leo "LureDragger" is and was kind enough to invite my son & I there earlier in December...we did catch a few fish but by Leo's admission it was not in its prime but there are fish to be had up there that time of year...

Let me say this, people who know me knows I am not into showing people up nor am I in to proving I am "God's Gift to Fish Catching"...

Hey FNF - I don't know if you make these comments because it is your own way of having fun but for a guy I have never met, I feel like you are trying to start something that isn't in the true spirit of this bulletin board...

And another thing...I am no "Newbie" when it comes to fishing for any specie that swims in the Columbia...

P.S. - I also don't catch smolts...

It sounds more like you are the sensitive type. Go ahead and post some more pictures of yourself holding those giant steelhead, day after day. I can remember the posts you made with all the smiley faces directed my way. Now that you are such an accomplished steelheader have you noticed any difference in the meat between the McNary rusted steel and the winter chromers you've caught lately? Since you are so new to Ifish, do a little archive searching of my posts and you will learn a little history. I have told more people about this place than you can imagine. I have shared all of my secrets and tips. My boat has landed almost 1700 steelies at McNary in the last 15 years. You have a ways to go to match that. It's to bad you can't take a little razzing cuz I know you were throwing all those comments out to bait me. Why don't you try to help more people instead of getting your hair up. I used to be like you but I have learned it is better to be humble. There is always somebody who catches more fish then either of us. Happy New Year! I have a lot more to deal with right now then trade barbs with you. Shake it easy!

FNF,

My comments are definately not directed to fire you up...and your point is well taken...I have not fished the JD in a couple of years and the McNary trip was my 1st ever so yes I would be a "Newbie" to that area...

and believe me, I am not sensitive either...You can't begin to fathom the harassmant I have to take when I am fishing with my friends as well as my son...

I feel it is a prerequisite that in order to fish in my boat that if you can't take a good verbal harassment then you may not want to fish with me...Its always about having fun and if we catch fish...hey thats a bonus.

I obviously don't know what or if you have going on in your life that may be aggitated by my comments but if I have struck a nerve with you then I am truly sorry. I don't think I have at any point called you out directly nor have I intended to do that...I wish I would have paid attention to your posts from earlier in the year, annd with a little luck...I will find some of them and learn some things.

Please accept my appoligies if you feel I have been out of line.

P.S. - Your comments about all the fish you and all the others have caught in the last 15 years...your right. However, given I have only lived in Oregon since 1992 I have been very fortunate to learn allot from many great people and fishermen.

I vow to get over there more often and definatley earlier next year to catch some of those higher quality fish without freezing while doing it...

I hope this reply finds that you & I can find some common ground and by the way...the quote/unquote sensitive comments...they are all good...I am quite used to it...

Kentucky Hog Hunter,
I do have some extra stress going on in my life. I hope you don't have any hard feelings towards me. I have never lied about my McNary reports. I know that a lot of people like to angle for fish that are in their prime. I am that kind of person. I give out reports during those times. You seem like a pretty cool guy and I hope to fish with you in the future. I'm sorry if I come across as sounding like an mudhole My boat looks so sad underneath all this blooming snow! Those smiley faces sure can be aggravating can't they?

Hey FNF,

Its all good...

I hope that everything works out on that other stuff for you...I had some very trying times with my son over the last few years and I really am trying to repair our relationship since his return from the Oregon Nat'l Guard Youth Challenge Program...So far there has been alot of quality time spen since he has been home.

OBTW, nevermind me, I have been kind of "Persnikity" lately myself (Persnikity - is that even a word)...All those days fishing in a row and lack of rest turns me into a pain in the &*^ according to my wife...but at the end of the day I always apologize for being a jerk and I guess I have kept her snow balled for 21 years...

I truly and willingly want to come up there in prime time next year and I will for sure see if I can pull some of those reports out of the archives...I really haven't been involved on this bulliten board heavily until the last 6 months...

It is very informative and that is what it should be...not about envy or greed but about sharing information...and to my own admission, I should make a conscious effort to put more informative posts out there intead of just posting a picture and shout out to a good time...

Good luck and tight lines to you and I will definately begin a search for those archives

Hey KHH,
Where have I been?? I know I had jury duty today but gosh, a lot has happened in the past few hours.

After your "bender" you went on I "in my own oppinion" think how can you improve on that??? Your kid, the results, and doing somthing you love.

You have proven yourself the past, what, 365 days that your a man of deversity and can adapt to any stream and condition to produce results and fond memories. Fishing is more than results, its "the expeirence". Some people degrade your character if you don't produce results.

Keep them posts comming in!!

Nookster -

Help!

There is a crazy man coming to town!

Don't worry, I am wrapping the Willie in duct tape to protect it from the ravages of the Yakaman!

No section of the Columbia is safe from him, once he gets his fish-face on!

Who else could get the river channel, and thus the state line, moved? Even the gamies don't mess with him!

I got this message from the Wu-man with regard to the Sturgeon Derby coming on Saturday:
Quote:
I
have stocked up on food for our weekend fun. We will have bacon, sausage,
eggs, and hashbrowns for breakfast, sirloin cheeseburgers, chips, pickles
for lunch. I want to make sure we keep Homer
happy and full so he doesnt chew our feet off.
<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Wu already lost three fingers on the trip last summer when he foolishly held onto a bag of Oreos that he opened within 22' of Yaka. He really isn't violent on purpose, it is just sort of a reflexive thing. But man, those insiscors are sharp!

No, Yaka, we can't fish Sturgeon this weekend at night. It is a daylight derby! There would be too much log-bronkin' going on anyway!

Sorry KHH, Don't mean to take this too far off topic. But if you truly want to make peace with the mighty Yakazuma, just bring food. Lots of food. And then stand back!
