Re: Single Eggs
O's
Several questions about making a spawn sack
1. do you make the egg bags before you go fishing or make them as you use them?
2. How tight do you fill the mesh with eggs?
3. Do you just put an egg loop over the mesh bag to attach it to a hook?
4. is there a trick to taking a piece of flat mesh and making a round bag of eggs?
5. after tieing the mesh off do you trim the extra mesh off?
basically, how do you do it, and are there any tricks? I have some single eggs and havent got around to experimenting my way thru it yet. Thanks

Re: Single Eggs
roy: What I've done while making these:
1. get a dinner size plate and use as your base to keep mess to a minimum.
2. Get a clear canister that 35 mm film came in. Go to anyplace that develops film and ask for them. If you want bigger sacks get a bigger container.
3. Go to fabric shop and buy the color netting material you want. Green or red. This is a good time to get it as it is used for xmas time. I don't know the name of the fabric. It also comes in white and is use for wedding favors.
4 Buy some unsented wax dental floss or if you want to try some mint go for it.
5 cut your fabric into squares. experiment before you cut to many. push the fabric into the container to form the sack. make sure you have some extra on top to tie off.
6 take your eggs and here is a little trick that you have to promise not to tell anyone including that nosey RT fellow get either a can of oil pack tuna or some sardines or some pieces of squid or shrimp and place your choice with the eggs into the sack. Once you decide how big you want the sack pull up the egg stuff sack to the top of the container.
Take your dental floss and tie a tight knot closing the sack snuggly around the eggs.. Cut off excess netting and then store the sacks in containers so they do not get crushed.
When you are ready to fish, run your hook through the center of sack and cast away.
Others may have there methods and may also want to share, but this should get you started.
Giz...

Re: Single Eggs
I know this is going to sound silly but you guys all had great ideas for the eggs. So how the heck after throwing countless shrimp through the air, do you keep sand shrimp on a hook longer then one cast... arg!

Re: Single Eggs
Penn,
Try putting yarn on through your egg loop on your hook and then place the tail of the shrimp through. The yarn will keep your line from tearing your shrimp in half.
Some guys like to thread the shrimp on their line with a tool. It all a matter of personal preference. Both methods catch fish.
Back to eggs: Pautzke's single eggs also work great for spawn sacs. After tying them up, you can place them in the same jar for storage.

Re: Single Eggs
the nice thing about the egg wrapping machine is that it hold the mesh cloth so you to use both hands to tie the knot. You also make the other bait balls the same way you make egg sacks "berries"
The trick for sand shrimp is lob casts, not setting the hook unnecessarily and the use of a thin wire wrapper.

Re: Single Eggs
On keeping the shrimp on the hook, I placed a bunch of those little rubber bands, like the ones they use for dental braces, in my tackle box. They are nice and soft and won't crush the shrimp. I run the hook through the shrimp and put one band over the thorax and one over the tail and sometimes will double the band over, depending on the size of the band and shrimp. This works great for sturgeon fishing and the best thing is when your hands are freezing, you don't have to tie extra knots like you do with stretchy thread.

Re: Single Eggs
Fishing springers at the mouth of the Sandy one of the favorite rigs is a "threaded" shrimp. They use a tube-like threader to run a line and a single hook the length of the shrimp. Lays the bait out nice and flat for anchor fishin'. By the looks of it, might be a pain in the rear for driftfishing , though. They have these gadgets at FMS.

Re: Single Eggs
Great idea about the rubber bands. I know where I can get some of those. I'm gonna give it a try in the morning. Hopefully they will stay on. A guy once showed me about going through the bubble in the tale then through the head. If you don't have to cast far it works fair at best. Thanks again for all the suggestions..

Re: Single Eggs
Spawn sacks are easy to make. They make mesh in red and I think other colors specificly for making spawn sacks.I think it is made by Atlas and they make magic thread to.All you have to do is cut the mesh into a square and place the eggs in the middle.Tighten the mesh and rap it and you should have some excess mesh at the top. Then rap the magic thread around a couple of times then tie a knot.Trim off any excess mesh. With magic thread you supposedly don't have to tie a knot but I do anyway to make sure it doesn't come untied.I am far from an expert on making them but I had a few loose eggs left over from some I cured and decided to make some. They are simple to make.I've seen some very good fisherman using them for steelhead with excellent results. Hope this helps.

Re: Single Eggs
I use the little clamp tool that came with my kit to hold the sacs while I'm buiding them but hemostats work too. It's better to go a slightly biiger peice of cloth you can trim off excess later,For Kings I like to use the tuna-egg mix ,for silvers and winteruns I use the left over sandshrimp tails with the eggs, the little foam balls about 1/8" in size , give a neutral boyancy.I run the hook thru the sac then place the top in the egg loop,
I keep them in small glass jars in the freezer, with about 5 or so in each jar they last a long time I've never gone thru a jar in days fishing, just refreeze whats left( in a pinch I'll use cocktail-shrimp also)

Re: Single Eggs
OK people.. I seem to not have a sandshrimp problem anymore. the suggestions were just great and I kept the shrip on all morning. didn't even have a fish steal one But if it was easy it would be called catching and not fishing. Need rain.

Re: Single Eggs
OK, someone said Cabela's has this thinga ma jig for tying these egg sacks. I am at their website right now, but I cannot find it, although navigating through their website sucks. I need to know what's the exact name of this device? I have a huge ziploc bag of single eggs and I really didn't want to use them on trout, so this would be great, so help a brotha out if you know the name of it. Yes, I did a search on it, but came up with nothing.

Fisherman's Marine in Oregon City carries mesh, thread and the little b.b. floating things to go inside. Frankly, I would stick with good old fashion egg cluster. drifter.

Re: Single Eggs
Go to a fabric shop or the fabric section at walmart. 2 yards will cost less than $2. The stuff works and the fish dont seem to mind it. If it wasnt for the mesh, I would have gone through several pounds of eggs fishing the tidewater with all the smolts. It is much easier to get them ready before you need them, but I have also done them up on the boat.

Re: Single Eggs
I save all my fish egg juice when I make them and keep it in the fridge. Isn't there some kind of foam out there that I can soak in the egg juice that will work as good as eggs. I thought there was an article in one of the fishing magazines last year about something like that.. anyone know? I hate to waste it.

Re: Single Eggs
Tried your link, visited the online store, and wouldn't you know that the damn picture doesn't work for the roe wrap. Be interesting to see what it looks like. Well after browsing Cabela's for it, not finding it, I came out $219.00 in the hole. I hate going to that website...my money burns a hole in my pocket. No, I am not happy to see you, it's just my money in my pocket. I did pick up 2 deer stands though for when I go hunting back in the banjo backwoods.

Re: Single Eggs
Cheap egg sacks:
Go to Michael's craft store next to Fisherman's Marine Supply (or to any craft store probably). You can buy 25 yards of wedding mesh (taffeta I think it's called) for $2.49. It comes in very wide sheets, so you can make those bigger sacks with ease. And it's cheap.

OK you 2 an@l retentive atithesis', Pro-Cure makes a good foam egg cluster imitation that comes 4 to a jar soaked in cured red egg juice. Call them at (800)776-2873 to mail order any of their products. Don't get excited Os, I didn't say male order . And 'Yall, if ya run out of cousins I know a Tillamook pig farmer who doesn't have a jealous bone in his body. Bring some 20-20 Yukon Jack and some of that southern swine tinglin' sweet talk of yours; even as handsom as you are I've heard these aren't easy pigs . Os has some loose fittin knee highs with bits of cotton evident around the inner rim I'm sure he'll let ya borrow; and they will definitely come in handy (and legy). - RT - (Please forgive me members; these 2 are just too much fun).

Re: Single Eggs
All this kentucky hollow humor is to funny.
Sponge baits are very easy to make. Cut sponge into bait size pieces (strips or balls). Heat up some vaseline on low heat(not the menthalatum) then add some secret scents, coloring and place sponge pieces into the mix to absorb. If using freshly squished bait (sand shrimp / eggs / sardines / herring) I suggest you freeze them until use for freshness
I like having coloring added to yellow sponges so when the scent washes out of the sponge you can see the change and reapply a scent
I had a link up previously on my site on how to make these but it got lost so I just trouble shot it ... Several other types of baits too

Re: Single Eggs
A friend from Ontario sent me some samples of what is popular there. Many Canadians prefer the sac baits to what I am familiar with. One of the very most popular and easy to use materials is fine ladies scarf material. It is very fine and much softer than the commercial mesh companies sell, making a much better looking bait. Popular colors include pink, orange shade for dirty water. As for tying them...some people prefer to use a needle and thread. I still love a finely cured roe bait but must confess these precision baits do look and fish good. If you use the coarse bridal mesh or commercial stuff..people claim it can be softened by gently boiling it first. I cannot verify that.

Re: Single Eggs
OK, I tried the little mesh roll from Joe's to make some spawn sacks and failed. I did find at Joann's Fabrics in Tigard the mesh in red though that is just like the Joe's stuff for a whole .89 cents a yard. Duh. I think the trick is to use a bigger piece that is easier to work with. That's what I'm going to try. I did manage to make a few out of the little roll, I'm going out in the morning and I'll see if they work.
