Default Best Clam Chowder in the West

Okay, its not too often I brag about something on Ifish, but this is definitly worth bragging about. I have descovered a secret place, where I believe serves the best clam chowder on the west coast. Not only that but it has the best atmosphere and view of just about any restarant on the entire coast.

If you have not visited Oceanaus in Depoe Bay, you are really missing out on something special. Not only do they have the best chowder, but the calamari is out of this world. Not to mention their Key Lime Pie......to die for.

I am no salesman here, but I know good food when I eat it, and dang is that good. If you have not been there, I dare you to prove me wrong with regards to my claim. I would be interested if anyone could prove me wrong, and I would love to hear it.

Just my

diamondfish,
I am going to try it this weekend. I love good chowder. Dory Cove at Roads End is real good, and The Kernville Steakhouse has outstanding chowder as well. Thanks for the tip! Looking forward to the Oceanaus this weekend.

I always use Mo's as the gauge of great clam chowder. Not a big fan of those creamy, thick chowders. Big bowl of hot Mo's chowder(and an oyster shooter). MMmmmmm

Can't remember the name but it's in Coos Bay just pass a small bridge on the right hand side as you are driving out to the beaches. Across the street from the visitors info center.

If you're not into gluey, potato-y stuff (like Mo's IMHO) you might want to try the Blue Heron Bistro in Coos bay. Yeah, I know, it's a German restaurant, but they do a chowder there that's closer to what I make at home than any I've ever had in a restaurant anywhere else.

I will give the Depot Bay/Newport area places mentioned a try though.

Not sure I would describe Mo's as gluey. If anything, its kinda runny (which I like). Lots of potato's though, and no celery (which has no place in clam chowder imo).

Not that I can be accused of missing too many meals, but I have been known on occasion when the weather is good to hop onto the Harley with the better half and motor to Depoe Bay, just for the food at Oceanus. Not too long ago we made 2 trips there in a weeks time, both on weekdays after she gets off of work.

I too would claim it was after work for me asa well, but for those of you who know me, work????? That is an awful four lettered word. I have a better four lettered word, its FISH.....that says it all.

Best little fish house in Washington,,,,,,Ocean Park Crab and Seafood. She makes a gallon at a time,,,,always hot,,,you can have it in a bread bowl if you're so inclined. You can buy it cold to go and nuke it at home or your beach getaway place. Trouble is she is permanently closing the second weekend of September . Making room for a lumber yard.also, her oyster stew is to die for,,she'll be sorely missed.

Try the Silver Salmon Grille's chowder in Astoria. I've talked about it before.

It's one of the member's here, (Katie Ann's) relatives, and it's really good for chowder. (He won a bunch of awards in Seaside, years in a row.)

Anyhow, I read a review in yahoo about his restaraunt and I couldn't believe how nasty they were! Goes to show you that most people that take the time to leave reviews are almost always motivated out of bad experience. Not many leave good things to say!

Anyhow, it IS good stuff, regardless of the poor review!

My favorite is the clam/smoked salmon chowder at the Uniontown in Astoria. No amount of bribery, threats, or sweet talking has resulted in the relinquishment of the recipe. Try it, you'll like it!

JUST ABOUT MOST CLAM CHOWDER IS PRETTY GOOD....oops! I even like clam chowder from a can. But I do remember Moes...it's pretty good. Also, the little shack next to that fancy restaurant (church) in Chinook is good chowder too.

Anytime you'd like a "chowder showdown" CAPT KUJO's homemade chowder is the best. It's featured at The Empire Room
