Default July Crab

Have some family coming in for the fourth and they really would like some crab. Since washington has a really screwed up situation in the sound was thinking of going out to west port or maybe down to illwaco. I do not have big traps. Mostly rings and such. Where will be my best chance to fill the relatives with crab?

Some of the best crabbing is on the oregon side just above point adams west of hammond. It in some what of a protected area and the depth we target is about 25 to 30 feet. There is a red nav aid #22 near by. Good luck

Tracker, The crabbing in the river that time of year is slow generally. When does Oregon close crabbing this year in the ocean? If it is still open your best bet would be to scoot around the south jetty and crab in 25-35 feet of water off of sunset beach. Come sept-oct (thru Nov) the mouth of the CR is killer crabbing. Good Luck .

If you have rings, just go over by the Desdemona Light on the Wa. across from buoy22/20, throw the hook over and have fun. No doubt fun for the kids at least.
The ocean usually closes 2-3rd week of July?

Tracker,

If family is coming in for the forth why go down to the CR?

Crabbing opens July 1 in WA. Part of eating crab is the catching. If not just go to the store and buy it.

Granted we can only take 5 crab a day but if you put the family on your boat and take them out---thats 5 each. A three day crab permit is dirt cheap, But the experience is priceless.

I would guess westport, The big C is putting out a lot of fresh water which drives out the crabs. Watch the Bonniville discharge gragh in the data page Jenny has for us. Between SS beach and bouy 22 is a great spot otherwise. Go to the bonniville fishcount page and click the flow and discharge hyperlink. web page You want to see it under 200 kcfs, which probably won't happen in July due to our snowpack.

When does silver fishing open in the ocean off the CR this year?

I can't believe I just typed that, that is just sad. I have been bitten by the work bug and it is only getting worse.

In years past we have done very well along the south side of the south Jetty at the CR. We dropped five pots and then went out for silvers. Had our 4 limits of silvers in a little over an hour and went back to pull the pots. We pulled the pots and had an easy limit of crab as well. I really don't do much crabbing, but the skipper that day dropped them pretty close to the jetty, I would say only 30 or so yards from the rocks. Good luck if you go.

I will be Salmon fishing and maybe Tuna hunting that weekend. So I will be in Ilwaco.

I have 4 large pots, and three small pots, you are welcome to use them all or how ever many you want. Let me know and I will leave them on the dock for you. I am now at L58.

When the regs firsdt came out they stated that it would be closed. Then I find they have changed their mind. I can not really trust that they will really have it open when they say they will. I think the game dept. should issue a page to each license holder and send out a page each few minutes updating what they have decided in that hour. Lately seems to change too much. Nothing can really be planned anymore. I am glad the hood canal thing is back on but sad for the state and the ill mannered way the regulations are handled.
