Satsop saves the day
Headed out early today to fish hoodsport. I have never wet a line in Washington before. Since I have absolutely no luck in Tillamook I needed a change.
Picked up Ramstrong at 4:30am and arrived at hoodsport and found the hatchery and boat launch directly after light. Fished in front of the hatchery with a couple hundred other people till Noon. We saw a very small hand full of fish caught (5 or so) between the 70 or so other boats and approx 100 bankies. Everybody we talked to gave us the same story that it has been hot (should have been here yesterday). Several people thought the fish would show up with the tide change. We werent sure the fish would show and made a decesion to try something different. We headed out to find the General Lee on the Satsop. We knew it would be orange with a big 00 painted on the side. After driving the entire river and no heyall we picked a spot and got after it.
I caught a clipped silver hen and chum hen and was done. Being the egg ***** I am that dark silver pot punched. Ramstrong had a hold of a silver buck for a while but didnt get it to the bank. I am not sure enough meat was left on the fish to hold a hook long enough to bank it. It was ugly dark.
All 3 fish were hooked on a corky yarn combo that didnt produce until we added a pink prawn tail, which has been in the freezer since the Willamette springer season.
All in all had a great time. Finally got to punch a tag.

Re: Satsop saves the day
WTG, Roy and Ryan. As soon as the rain brings it up we are going to driftboat the E.F. Satsop for the large Nov. hooknosed silvers. Maybe more than once if the Tillamook nooks don't show with the rain. But they will, right?

Re: Satsop saves the day
Glad to see you guys found some fish, I personaly skip the Hoodsport madness. To many people to play with the dogs!!! The Satsop river valley is sure pretty right now. Boy we need some rain here just as bad as you do in Oregon to bring up the fish. The Satsop average flow this time of year is 2650 CFS, right now it is 650 CFS. Hard to float and the fish that are there are gettin' pretty worn out. Anyone for a rain dance???
Good luck and tighht lines, Jeff

Re: Satsop saves the day
Hoodsport was netted out bad on Thursday. The entire area was strung solid with nets and I mean dozens. There was absolutely no room for any fisherman whatsoever. I think that may have impacted your fishing. It had been very hot prior to the mass netting. It should get good again. I drifted the Satsop(which was more of a creek) yesterday and caught an assortment of very dark fish. The silvers were red/black and the chums barely alive. Pray for rain!

Re: Satsop saves the day
Sorry I didn't see y'all on Saturday, and honestly I don't remember where or what I was doing....my days off all blend together so I usually forget what I did specifically on a specific day. I went down to the Cowlitz Friday Morning (? I guess) it was so damned crowded, I thought about setting up a grill and selling hamburgers and coffee to all of the people..lol Well we didn't even climb out of the general lee (the windows wouldn't roll down..too cold) So we drove up to the Satsop and fished above Schaeffer State Park below the mouth of Decker Creek, I guess that's it. Crossed the river and went downstream a ways until I saw some fish holding. After hours of pestering these fish to take my corkies and yarn, they did. I walked away with one huge bright buck, and then I had a darker buck. Both Doggies. Did see a couple of silvers landed and released. Well actually snagged and released. Both of mine were 23-25lbs. and 15lbs. Already hit the smoker. My friend landed a super skunky and super foul smelling hen that we released. He foul hooked about 4 fish cause he isn't a champ like me Oh yeah, Saturday we drove up to the Skykomish and turned around, we were way too tired. There's really not that many fish that I saw coming through the river anymore. We had the most productive day that I could tell...besides the snaggers up at decker creek of course. I caught 4, released 2. My friend caught 5 and released 5. Well at least you guys got to punch that card! Kick butt.

Re: Satsop saves the day
Yeah, that fish was nasty, he sure liked those prawn tails though. I missed him the first time, but hooked him on the next cast. Hoodsport was a dissapointment to say the least, I've never seen so many people fishing for so few fish. Then on the way back to the ramp watching the netter stripping eggs from the fish and throwing carcasses back in the water almost made me sick. I've heard you guys up in WA complaining about it, but I thought it was being blown out of proportion a bit. But it isn't, most Natives don't appear to be the good stewards of the land they would like us to believe. But all in all, it was a nice trip and Enjoyed fishing with BOE. To bad Yall wasn't to be found, I still think we need to get him and Os in the same boat.

Re: Satsop saves the day
Yeah the Satsop is pretty bleak right now, and it too is crowded for what skunky fish are left. LOL @ Osprey being taken. I do have relatives that live close by, but they are too close to kin. It's ok though because I am going back to bama for Thanksgiving and all of my cousins are coming into town Lock up your liquor and your daughters.

Re: Satsop saves the day
Yeah and you better not fall asleep with your mouth open Adams apple? What kind of person do you think I am, of course I will make her shave it first and splash on a lil Brut musk aftershave. Lots of moonshine, lots of banjos, and lots of cousins.....what more could a guy ask for?
