Default Chum Questions

After being our of town for the better part of the last three months making my boss alot of money and then having a sick father, I am about to get out on the river again. I have never fished for chum before and was looking for some pointers. I am a bank fisherman and will be hitting the Skykomish this weekend.

Is drift fishing or jig fishing more effective for these creatures?

Also what type of water should I look for on a river like the sky (big and open)?

any help will be greatly appreciated

Fish the cracker bar area with a pink or pink/white jig in 1/4 oz and you should do well. Drift fishing works well also.

There was an article in the Fishing and Hunting News showing bank fishing places and tactics for catching dog salmon.

Went up to the Sky, from Tacoma, about 3am Saturday morning. We got there about 5am and checked the river out. Usually when those fish are coming through, there are a ton of people. We saw only one driftboat and no bankies. The river looked low, but still fishable. We just turned back around and went back to sleep. The river is super open and wide..but not too wide..just yet. I love going up that way just for the scenery, just beautiful. I think most bank guys up there use green or pink corkies and yarn. I don't know many that use jigs for the chums, but have seen them use them for the pinks. I frequent that river for the winter run steelies and see all of this from the road up above. Yeah the latest fishing and hunting news has articles on chums, but I don't think it's the latest one....the newest one out has articles on the winter run steelies. It may arrive in the mailbox before it hits stands though due to a subcription. Let me know how you did.

Hey_yall thanks for the tips. I went out Sunday fished various spots from the cracker bar down to lewis street with both jigs and drift gear. I hit one dark one on a cerise jig tipped with some bait. There was alot of people out there some of them fishing some of them in a "jerk off" contest - I think that snagging makes it even more difficult to hook a fish. An oldtimer told me the next big rain and the river will be plugged with em.

The Sky is a long drive, don't you usally fish the cowlitz? My Brother lives in Adna (we grew up about an hour from the twin cities)and I am going down that way thur through sunday to try and kill a deer.
Probably will take the fishing gear with me.

I have a friend of mine that lives up in Sultan so he will keep me clued in as when the fish really arrive. I give them another week or two and they will be in there thick. Yeah I usually fish the Cowlitz, and consider that my "home" river, but I have fished other rivers in the area for the change of scenery and the change of odor. Seems snaggers stink pretty badly. Cowlitz is way up and will keep rising making it tough for the waders, so I think I am done with the Cowlitz until winter steelies arrive.
