Default hatches?

So as I was fishing this weekend, on the wilson and the sandy, I noticed a ton of caddis staging. When do you guys notice a good caddis hatch? What is your favorite hatch to fish and approximately when do these hatches occur?

So this has been read by 26 Ifish Flyfishers and noone has a favorite hatch? maybe I have to start this, but my favorite hatches are from the east coast since I have yet to fish a season here. In June and early July I love to fish the Green Drake hatch in lakes. My favorite srteam hatch is the white fly (mayfly) in Aug. & Sept. Come on guys

fair enough, one of my least favorite hatches is the angler hatch that occurs every spring on the Deschutes...related to this, one of my favorite hatches is a Salmonfly hatch on any river they hatch on (what's better than throwing a big dry bug)...

Seriously though, another one is the little BWO hatches in winter on the Met.

I've enjoyed the caddis hatch on the Deschutes in late July and early August. It can be so hot you'll swear the sun is trying to kill you, but man those redsides can smoke the reel.

Aside from the obvious hatches on the D such as the Salmonfly and Caddis.....the BWO hatch in the fall and winter is my favorite. I like to use my little short 3wt on those puppies fishing upstream and picking them off from the bottom of the pack and working up. It's a short hatch but loads o' fun.

I love/hate Trico hatches. Nothing more aggravating than being in the middle of a feeding fenzy, as thousands of bugs carpet the water, trying to get your fly noticed. Even trying to see your fly amongst all the Tricos is difficult. Sometimes you just have to guess; my fly is about there, a rise, a strike, a miss, rats. Try it again. But it's awesome when the stars align, and a trout slurps your bug and your tight to a fish.

I agree with not likeing the trico hatches. They can be really tough to fish, but most amazing to watch

Green Drakes on the Metolius and McKenzie.

BTW, GD's live in rivers only - no lakes. Perhaps you mean Hexagenia? or Callibaetis on the lakes?

I really don't fish much hatches, but I do love the hex hatch...those big yellow mayflies really bring up the big fish! The cali hatch has also always been good to me.

Ummm, ok...when the bug thingys are everywhere and the fish are eating them...if you have the right fly on it can be a good thing!

Really though, for lack of time on the water and limited entemology knowledge...Salmon/Stone on the D. I don't think there's anything wrong with that!

Without a doubt my fav hatch is the Green Drake hatch on my home waters of nor cal and west nevada. Those big trout think the drakes are sooo delish.

The deschutes boasts some amazing hatches...they have 4 species of stoneflies in the river...including a small population of hexagenia.

2nd fav hatch is the caddis hatch on the deschutes...nutty.
