what truck would you choose
which would you choose brand new
toyota tundra
ford f-150
dodge 1500
Im thinking tundra because I own a toyota now and don't know much about the other two. Just looking for some input.
I will be working in portland for a general contractor and will be doing a lot of driving. I probably wont be pulling a boat anytime soon. I am just looking for a good truck that will get me to work, hunting, fishing and around town.
thanks in advance.

Re: what truck would you choose
Any of them would be great.
If you go Dodge, get the Hemi.
If you go Ford, getthe big v-8 (5.4L still?)
Spend a little more and get a Dodge 2500 or Ford F250 Diesel...(If it was me...)

Re: what truck would you choose
Let me ask you this, what dont you like about the chevy 1500?
Chevy half tons are amazingly tuff, I put 180,000 miles on my 2000 when I had it. My dad has a 2001 with over 110,000 now. Alot of those are gravel and mountain miles and we had ZERO problems. Chevy will get better gas mileage than any of those as well. The Hemi is a sports car engine someone thought should go in a truck, bad idea. The ford, well its a ford and you couldnt pay me to take a blue oval. I usually just say go with a cummins but you were very specific on what you wanted.
My advice to you is to just look and test drive a chevy 4x4. If its still not what you want.....well....buy what you want I guess

Re: what truck would you choose
Love my Tundra, it's been a great truck for hauling, towing, and just driving. Very reliable, quiet, and well built. My buddies with Dodges even comment about the level of fit and finish on my Toyota.
By the way, what does "buy American" mean anymore? Toyota has many US auto plants and most of the parts in the GM, Ford, and Dodge cars are likely made over-sees. I think you buy what you like.

Tundra for sure. sorry all of you "american" truck fans, but if you want dependable and are not needing a truck to pull/carry heavy stuff, then the Toy is the best for you.

Tundra, hands down. The V8 has plenty of pop and your maintenance cost will be much lower in the long run. It also holds its value well.
The Diesel Tundra should be out in the next couple of years as well...

Re: what truck would you choose
If a fella wasnt towing and drives alot I would look at the ranger(plain jane) or tacoma(if ya like fancy) they might be nice if gas hits 5 bucks a gallon. A ford ranger(towed my 2500lb ski boat no problem) is so cheap its dam near desposable ,I had one brand new drove it for 6 years(minimul problems) and sold it for 7500 I think I paied $11000 for a new 4x4 king cab in 98 they are not that much more now. Now I have a 150 4 door super crew 4x4 @ $26,000 new their not a bad deal-it tows my 7000 lb camper at 65 over the pass. My ranger was very nimble in the woods(much easyer to manuver and I loved 4 wheeling with my stick) Once the third kid arrived I couldnt justify it. Besides It gave me an excuse to buy a camp trailer If ya get a smaller truck you can use the money you saved to get a nice canopy some bigger tires and a little fishing vessel a dirt bike or a couple tanks of gas and some insurance.

If you are talking about the half ton for each- yes. The Hemi is great if you like to fill up every 2 days and the ford just doesn't last like a toyota-

here we go again, climb under a chevy and then under a ford or dodge, in a gm car you will see xtra braces and bracket to build the integrety of said vehicle, now crawl under a dodge or ford, no braces or xtra brackets as it is build into the vehicle its self, i have worked in collision all my life and every time i work on a GM car i cringe.

BUY AMERICAN............
I'm on my 5th New Chevy Truck in the last 20 years. Would never change.
My Dads on his 2nd new Chevy Truck.
Even with Toyota having a brand new plant in San Antonio kicking out Tundras. I still believe in buying (true) American..
My 2 cents.. Made in America means keeping our people employed....

Toyota Tundras are built in Indiana and Texas.

This Hemi was designed for the truck, and later made it's way into cars. It makes plenty of torque down low, and the fact that it makes more HP and torque than the 5.3 or 6.0 doesn't make it a "sports car" engine.
F150s are the best selling out of these trucks, so whether or not you would own one has little effect on whether someone else will like the truck
That said, if I didn't need my 3/4 Dodge, I'd drive a half ton Chevy.

Hmmmm. If you had bought a Japanese product (made in the U.S.A. of course), you would likely be on your second new truck.
Net savings --- three new trucks.

Re: what truck would you choose
Texas plant opening in December, I believe.
As far as 'True' American, toyota employs thousands of folks here in the states. There are upwards of a thousand folks alone at corporate in Torrance, CA. The Texas plant will bring a ton of local jobs to whichever Texas dirt plot they build on.
That said, if I had to pick a Detroit-based truck it would be the dodge. Fords seems to care more about selling as many vehicles as possible as opposed to building reliable vehicles.

Re: what truck would you choose
Texas Plant is open. Not in full production yet. Test runs of a single truck are under way. They assemble a single truck tear apart that same truck. Working out the bugs per say. Brother in law was one of the first 30 employed. Nothing wrong with Toyota Tundras .They are built here in the States.
Truth be told I had a Toyota for about 6 months. Just couldn't hold up to the requirements of my Chevy.

Started off with a New V-6 regular cab. Totally stripped down plain jane truck. Rubber mats no head liner, roll up windows...yada yada yada.
Over the years I have been lucky to upgrade toys, boats, had a couple Kids.
Requiring bigger Trucks along the way.
Besides go back a few years Toyota is just now in the Big Boy market. Second Truck I think not.

Not sure the tundra is a "Big Boy" rig. When they produce a 350/3500 class truck then we'll see what they are made of. The Tundra is a nice car. I'd take ford, dodge, and even a chevy first.

Re: what truck would you choose
1/2 ton for tooling around? Easy choice for me - a Chev Suburban. Amazing how much you can fit in the back, and it stays dry! I am on my third Suburban, at 7 years each. The 350 based powerplant has been around forever. And coupled with an auto tranny that seems to keep the motor revs at low rpm, until needed, for some pretty decent fuel economy for a big rig. The Z 71 package provides slightly stiffer suspension then a regular 1/2 ton and drives like a car.
Did I mention that I like Chev Suburban's ?

You Toyota guys have to be kidding me???
I would put my Ford up against a Toyota any day and it.
I don't see Toyota with 10ft bigfoot campers towing boats do you?
I don't see Toyota'a pulling a 18000lbs Gooseneck do you?
I don't see Toyota's for Construction trucks do you?
And when did Toyota get into the Truck Market? 199?

Re: what truck would you choose
My son and I have had vehicles from all three manufacturers and the Toyota has had the least amount of trouble. The Ford and Dodge were/are diesel models and the Dodge has been the better truck. I'm sure Ford has made some improvements in rustproofing since I owned mine from '83 to '97. The body gave up before the drive train and chasis. The Dodge is now 10 yrs old and it has held up well with now nearly 170K miles on it.

Re: what truck would you choose
Well, Toyota does not use country music in their commercials, so that is a huge + right there.
As far as hauling power, sure, if I needed to haul around something like a motor home or whatever, the larger trucks would be needed. I don't though, so the more attractive and longer lasting Toyotas fit my needs better. A Hemi would be cool though...

Re: what truck would you choose
If you are considering a Chevy, just look at the
frame and compare to the Ford--Chevy loses every time.
I have owned a 63, 72, 77, 88 and a 95 Chevy.
All brand new.
I now drive a 04 Powerstroke--best vehicle I have
ever owned. Chevy lost another customer.
In construction, you might need the bigger truck.
For maintenance cost go with the Toyota
Just my 2 cents.
Oh yes call the Ifish ford sponsor!

HA HA HA-----------THIS HAS BENN A ARGUMENT since 1923.
Buy American, heck 1/2 the parts are made in countries other than US.
Toyota built un US all parts are forien made. Chevie has had and still uses lesser quality parts. and REAL poor engineering. GM has always used shimms to make parts fit
because thay did not put quality in the design. "Body by Fisher' WHAT A JOKE!

I think you will get more in a Dodge. It has the Hemi and a big back seat, good combo for trolling, mooching, and other means of hooking up......Good fishing !!!

Re: what truck would you choose
Dodge. Gotta support the corporate family that feeds my family.
No freakin' way will I buy overseas if I can avoid it. Sometimes you just can't. I don't care if Toyotas are made in San Antonio (and I've got family there...) the profits from said vehicle sales end up in Japan.
regards, aw.

Re: what truck would you choose
Just bought a new 4 door tacoma long bed. I love it. I drove a f250 diesel the last 7 years and a toyota t100 before that. If you need a pickup (none of these are trucks guys) for heavy hauling a 3/4 or 1 ton is what you need. I liked that old T100, and the new tacoma is the same size. Perfect for towing the small stuff (rated for #6500) and great for general run around use. Hopefully it will still be as reliable as the old ones now that they are american made. I do like the fact that it has 50 mroe HP than my diesel did! In fact, not only was my tacoma made in the US (well almost, california is close) 70% of the parts are US made also. BTW my T100 was made in the US also  My f250 was made in Canada.

Re: what truck would you choose
There isn'tthat much difference where the parts come from for any of these trucks.

Re: what truck would you choose
Dodge - Made in Mexico
Chevy - Made in Canada
Toyota - Made in USA
Nissan - Made in USA (except trannies)
Luv my Tundra Now, 3/4 and 1 Ton..Dodge diesel. Hemi is a 1/2 ton motor that gets horrible mileage. I've had too many problems with Ford trucks. Probably will never buy one again.

F150s are the best selling out of these trucks, so whether or not you would own one has little effect on whether someone else will like the truck

These quotes are alway skewed because govenment/rental car purchases are included.

Re: what truck would you choose
Well Ive had every one of those trucks
Toyota - good truck, fair milage, poor turning radius, dosn't hold enuough fuel.power is ok. put 34,000 on mine and sold it. needed a bigger truck
Ford f150- 300 inline 6- Road great, tuff paint, body and engin. transmission was from mazda([whoopsydaisies!]) Went threw 2 trannys. 274,000 miles over all best truck for me but had electical problems and eventualy burned to the ground in august of 2003.
Dodge.- over all worst truck I have had. 5,000 miles and sold it for a 3 thousand less than I paid. that truck had all kinds of power but the 4wd sucked. also a buddy had one also and his 4wd went out during a ice storm a few years back 9 grand to fix it. the truck had 22K on it.
GMC 2500- my current rig. 6.0 gas. 13mpg very comfy to drive. crappy ground clearance. cheap paint that scratches if you look at it wrong.constant dash rattle that is driveing me nuts. FYI I use to work at GM in Michigan. I figured they changed by now but they haven't. I backed into a cement pole at the toyota dealership about a month ago and I was only going 5 mph and did 2600 bucks in damage. didn't even feel it. the bed in this truck is made of tin foil. you can thow a pillow in it and it will dent.
Im pretty sick of all the trucks out right now but I think my next one will be a ford. or Toyota tacoma.

Re: what truck would you choose
Calling the Tundra a truck, is like calling an Outback anything but a station wagon.
When you step up from the 1/2 ton and get the 3/4 or 1 ton on the Ford, you get solid axles, rather than a slightly larger version of a car design

Re: what truck would you choose
everyone is throwing out brands, but the reality is the manufacturers do not make the perfect contractors truck. that will do everything you will need it to do. you need great milage for commuting for jobs and bids, you need lots of space for hauling tools material, high towing capacity for dump trailers and rented equipment, large ladder/lumber racks etc. the perfect contractors truck is a myth. it takes three trucks to run my construction buisness. i could reduce it to two trucks with a new midsized 1/2ton longbed standard cab, 4x4 v6 5speed fleet spec truck. when you buy it, remember it is a work truck. it is going to get trashed. it is not about pretty, it is about putting money in your pocket. go look at the best fleet sales place in your area

Really?
Does Japan own Toyota and/or Nissan.........or do the owners of Toyota and Nissan stock own them?
So unless every owner of Toyota and/or Nissan stock lives in Japan, your statement is blatantly false.

Well now Dan. You are starting to sound like a free-market globalist. Next you'll be spouting conservative politics!

Re: what truck would you choose
If you were to haul anything, I would really consider a diesel on a 3/4 or 1 tonner...why?
-BETTER milage than the gasser 1/2 tonners!
-can always depend on diesel for longer life
-very torqy, if you like to consider the guts of a truck
-did I say it has better milage? BETTER MILAGE!
-If you want a quality ride, definately consider the Tundra. Next year, Toyota will bring out an all new Tundra that will finally compete with the top three in the 1/2 ton compartment. But, most likely Toyota will sacrifice ride for the other advantages. So, look into the 06 Tundras now for ride quality and the such...It just doesn't make any sense if a person wants to have a truck that will be comfortable like a car and have high gas milages be buying anything other than the:
Tundra, for its ride Or a
Diesel, for its milage...
Fish Mode
Another thing to consider, fuel costs are of no consequence to fuel milage. The REAL QUESTION IS, what would you consider more higher in priority; fuel costs, which only really differentiate between a couple dozen cents, or milage, which only a difference of one, will push you a full mile per gallon...think about it. BTW, diesel is averaging out cheaper than gas is now...summer trend
