Oregonian fishing reports
I dont know about the rest of you, but I'd like to see more effort on the Oregonians part to spend more time on fishing and hunting. This is Oregon and there is a lot of outdoorsman here. The once a week report is lacking in tech and details. Does Bill Monroe get limited in space, or does he not want to spend more time on his reports?Id just like to see more effort, thats all.........

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
I agree!
Though I live in Washington, I used to go to school at OSU and love that paper. I get it at work. I remember the days when they had an entire "outdoors" page equally divided between hunting(in season) and fishing with good, thorough reports.
I still like to read about how the old stomping grounds are producing but, like you say, there is nothing to read!

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
I agree with you guys. The "outdoors" section in the oregonian is a ***! The best report I have found is in our local paper here in McMinnville written by SailCat(Michael Teague). You can also get it from http://www.theguidesforecast.com . Its a shameless plug but I think its the best report around.

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
Maybe I live within a strange community of people , but most everybody here looks forward to the Outdoors report, even as brief and weak as it is. The folks at work that don't fish look forward to the fishin' report just as a topic of discussion! I think it is a true part of our northwest culture. I wonder if the Oregonian realizes how popular this little section is? I would bet a full page of outdoor sports stuff, weekly, would be a hit.Get some true specialists writing. Hunting and fishing stories, gear, photos, reports etc. would only increase readership.

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
Bill Monroe is supposed to be at the fish flinging party Saturday.Maybe we should dunk his head in water until he gives us what were looking for. More fishing reports. The only paper I buy is Thursdays to see the outdoor section. I got into that habit 2 or 3 years ago when there was actually a couple of pages or info to read, and I still do it but I can read this section in about 3 minutes. Come on Bill give us what we want. More reports or at least be a little long winded so I have a little more entertainment.
And thats my 35 cents worth.

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
Hey all, The good fishing reports that used to run in the Oregonian left when Tom McCallister(sp?) left the paper. From what I see from Bill Monroe is he spends alot more time hunting this time of year rather than fishing.
In the past I have e-mailed bill at the Oregonian and if he's in town he has gotten back to me with answers to specific questions. I do really miss the days of the old outdoors though.---Smj

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
As an alternative in the Portland area, you should think about the Vancouver paper on Thursdays (The Columbian). I have seen in depth articles about nearly every fishery in the area. Every week the paper gives catch ratio's per angler for popular Columbia and Southwest Washington streams. There is no comparison between the Oregonian and The Columbian when it comes to fishing reports. They will also do in depth articles about hunting opportunities, but they are only for Washington area's.

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
All of the above responses are correct..I believe Bill Monroe is NOT adequately covering the Outdoors section in Thursdays Oregonian in relation to the people that buy the Paper and "somewhat" reley on its information. C'mon BILL.....whats going on here? Doesn't the Oregonian give you enough space to write in or is it that you're TOO busy somewhere "on assignment?"
I wake up in the dark, like thousands of local Oregonians, only to wander out to my mail Box and am let down Consistantly, with the quantity AND quality of Bill's reports. Like it says above, it only takes 2-3 minutes to read the report and then Im done.
Bill, if you're reading this....take note at Bob Rees' "The guides Forecast". Now this guy Guides daily, has a Business of his own to run, and STILL finds time to contact correspondents in the field to get good quality information for over 2,500 subscribers....WEEKLY!!!!
I KNOW it does NOT take long to gather information from field correspondents, dictate it into a recording machine, and have your secretary type something up that is fit to print. I hope these responses translate into a New and Improved Outdoors section before X-Mas time!!!

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
What are you guys talking about? The Oregonian has an outdoor section????
Bill Who?
I quit reading the Oregonian all together a few years ago when the outdoor section was dropped. Now I limit my reading to the Sunday funnys and the GI Joes Sunday advertisement. The wife points out something about once a month she wants me to read. I would cancel it all together if the wife would let me.

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
The "BOregonian" as I like to call it. Bill's column is to short and usually to outdated. You would think living in the NW the "BOregonian" would realize the life style of the people that read the paper, we like the outdoors (even when it's not raining) we hike, bike, fish, hunt and all the other great activities enjoyed in the region. They throw us a BONE, with a weekly "fishing forecast" and small column on Sunday that could use a little more substance.
Bill nothing wrong with your writing, just wish it contained a little more detail, and a lot more content=space. I believe your limited by "the man" and "the man" is out of touch with it's readers! We want a CHANGE!

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
I think we have a good thing going here with this thread. If we get enough people adding to it, it might come in as a handy tool to present to the Oregonian to get them to consider a better outdoors report.
Secondly, If you call the Oregonians Inside Line at 503-225-5555 and enter extension 9010. Bill Monroe has a pretty good fishing report on there that he keeps fairly current. It is not always full of information, but sometimes it is. I know he does an excellent job covering the Spring Chinook run in this report. Try it out every now and then and see what you think.

I heard of this guy, I think they call him the "Reel Truth" or something like that. I bet he could do a great job with the outdoor section. You could even put a picture of his ugly mug next to the report!

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
Hey Bait-o-Eggs...
I TOO get up every sunday morning, pick up the paper and look for one of 3 things.
1. GI Joes Ad
2. Fishermans Ad
3. Bill Monroes article
Whats wrong with us? Can't we get out of the house enough to actually enjoy those things we stare at in the paper? I want you to know I'm laughing at myself right now. Scott

hottamale
I too look for the fishermans ad. But it doesnt come every week. I sort of look at it as a bonus when I get one. We are pathetic when we sit on our duff and dont go become the article.
I got a 2 day hall pass this weekend from the wife for fishing, but turned in Sundays to spend some time with the kids. This responsibility thing isnt working well with my fishing plans (dreams).
The kids are not quite big enough to go fishing yet, but getting close.

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
<sarcasm on>
Y'all are barking at the wrong dog. I really don't think Bill gets much latitude about what goes in the teency little space he gets on Thusday. I think the real problem comes from the top: Sandra Rowe - a middle aged wretch from Newport News, Virginia, where they don't talk about fish unless its in the cooking section or a restaurant review. Back there the fishermen fish for bass and they don't know how to read, so they don't put anything in the paper.
</sarcasm off>

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
I made a call to Bill Monroe's extension as well. It is worth the call. Decent information on fishing the north coast, although, as you would expect, the report is a little discouraging due to the the "2000 Salmon Drought".

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
You guys have got it all wrong. By the time it gets to the paper, the fishing in that particular piece of water has probably declined, and the article is useless. Instead of reading the paper, get out there and explore! I make it a point to NOT fish where the paper says to fish. Every time I do, I get skunked. When I go where my instincts tell me to go, I get fish. If you get out and explore, you'll have a good time just exploring, and you'll learn about the water so you can catch fish. It may take a while, but you'll figure it out. Why sit there reading about fishing when you can actually make your own news? Heck, if you've had a good day fishing, call Bill Monroe and tell him it's something he might want to write about!

Hey Gang,
Why beat up on Bill and his paper?
Isn't that why we have this great site called IFISH???
Need a report, just ask and someone will respond!
How good is that?

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
No Happybrew. I think we got it right. I'm sure everyone realizes that the report is a few days old by the time we get it. But the report is a general indication of what's going on. When I'm looking for a good report I get on the phone and talk to the boys who were there yesterday and find out what rock they were standing on. The entertainment is what were looking for. The report, plus the latest methods to hook that chromer or the new gadget to sharpen your hooks. With of course the GI Joes ad close by.

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
Ok, Ok,
So we are a little bit harsh in our criticism about the "Oregonians" Outdoor Section, and yes you're right...when I want a report, I pick up the phone and call a handfull of guys who have recently been there, BUT, I still think Bill could do a better job at reporting some "specifics" in length versus "Fish are in the Sandy", Etc.
I DO like the Inside Line report but it always sounds like Bill is on his car phone enroute to another "location" and appears to be rushed. I think sometimes it's a "Guess" as to what is happening versus actual knowledge. No big deal...I just get excited for Thursdays Mornings report. I should know better.

Maybe if we all sent e mails or letters to the Oregonian, we might just get a positive outcome.....more outdoors news!

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
Geeezz.....i have been calling the inside line fishing report for years ! I have found that his reports are only as accurate as you people clue him in on......Mr. Bill can't be everywhere....right? He does take off and fish or hunt for a week or so at a time but if you are any fisherman at all you know traditionally where the fish are....what time or year... and would fish anyway with a fish report or not....To me the inside line is for entertainment purposes only..... Fish at your own risk !
Mr. D
Oh oh oh !! Hottamale1, any connection with the HotTamale show on cable? Any way.....I love the show on the Nestucca tidewater....but what guts to do a whole show and the only excitement was the D-O-G swallowing a glob of eggs with a hook

Re: Oregonian fishing reports
I'm sure that Bill Monroe works within the constraints management put on him. And if anyone of you send a plaintive e-mail to the Oregonian before you send one or more to Congressmen for the much more important Col. springer allocation issue, you have a poor sense of priority for fishermen's causes. Furthermore, it was just posted prior to this thread that Mr. Monroe is coming to help out with the worthwhile Ifish salmon carcass distrbution event, and was going to report about it in his column. .... As I've said before you all have the right to express yourself, within reason and primarily fishing related, here on this BB. However, it would be better if more thought went into content and timing before clicking on the submit post icon. Not a big deal, just .02 on this (and it applies to myself also). Thanks guys. - RT - BTW, while you need to request Jen or I to delete an entire post, you can click on the pad/pencil icon above your posted message to change it. That eliminates having to add another post when you forgot to put something in also.
