Default Newport Bar Restrictions w/pic

I'm thinking about going out on Monday for some bottom fishing. Not too far...3-4 miles. This is the prediction .MON...N WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 3 FT. SW SWELL 5 FT. Is it worth the trip from Salem or are restrictions likely? 21' jet boat

Usually they check the bar by 5:30, at least they are usually on the bar by then. You can phone them at 6 and probably get the report.

Thanks Ron....I was trying to see if these number were historically indicative of a bar restriction. I know it's hard to look into a crystal ball and make a prediction though.

3 and 5 probably not. But be aware of the tide direction. Look for high slack or the tail end of incoming. A hard running tide with those numbers could add up to a "sporty" ebb chop that would restrict crossings until the tide changes. That all being said 3 and 5 with the wind predictions will not make for a great ocean to shut down in and drift. Check it at 5:30 or 6:00 then make the run over the hill and still get a good day in. As of 0850 (Monday) there are No Restricitons on the Bar. Less than 1-3' swells and Zero wind right now. Best bet before you drive out to the coast is to contact your local Coast Guard station and ask about restrictions. R

Thank you all for the help. I'm getting better at the salt water stuff but like to have input as well. We went out 0605 and crossed the bar at about 8am. The bar and the ocean were flat. We fished about 5 miles south and about three miles out. We were using shad runners and shrimp/squid flies. The fishing was slower than usual but it was still fun. Set two crab traps northwest of the bar but they were empty. The water got pretty rough coming back at around 2pm.
