Washing Marabou jigs
I was wondering if you guys had any particular favorite soaps for washing your marabou jigs? I've got several that I've got to get ready for Saturday.

Re: Washing Marabou jigs
Ramstrong, I don't know if you have ever heard of the old wives' tale of vinegar? My great-grandmother and mother have spoken of using vinegar to remove scent, etc. and as a cleaning agent for windows, etc. I am all for this stuff. I wash my camo with detergent, then I rewash it with a cup or two of vinegar. What works on windows, mirrors, and clothes, surely will work on a maribou jig easily. Plus it's cheap.

Re: Washing Marabou jigs
I haven't found anything that will remove scent from Maribou,I just strip it clean with a razor and start over.

Ramstrong-
I've had pretty good success with Joy detergent. Rinse well then gently squeeze out the excess water. Grab the wife's hair dryer to fluff 'em up.
It's best to avoid getting oily scent on the maribou feathers, though; it prevents the natural 'breathing' action that makes the jigs so effective in the first place. Try some sticky stuff (like Smelly Jelly in the jar) on just the head of the jig & six inches of the line above.
At least that works for me.

Re: Washing Marabou jigs
Personally when I am finished fishing with a particular jig I will hang it on the outside of my fishing vest so that it will dry out properly. This keeps the jig clean and ready for use the next time I need it.
Most soaps today contain too many chems and scents. For the price of a jig, if it needs to be washed, I would just tie on a new one.

Re: Washing Marabou jigs
I have never felt a need to wash my jigs. Even if the jig feathers are matted due to scent, they will still work good in most cases. As Sailcat mentioned, it's a good idea to apply the scent on the head of the jig or on the line above it. A lot of the times when I'm using bait with jigs I'll put the scent on the bait itself.

Re: Washing Marabou jigs
I've never tried using the stuff for this purpose, but if were to try washing scent off of jigs, I'd reach for my trusty can of WD-40, spray'em down, and hose'em off. I've used "WD" for about everything. Works great for removing pitch from your hands and glue from bumper stickers, pretty good fish attactant, and not a bad lubricant either. One thing's sure, it won't hurt your jigs!

Re: Washing Marabou jigs
Ivory soap is what I use to clean streamer flies, followed by a bit of blow drying. I suppose it would work the same for jigs. It has no scent, just basic soap.

Re: Washing Marabou jigs
Hi everyone,I posted I thought on this site but maybe it was bob's.I never have used scent on my jigs,BUT I have washed them before useing them.I'll tell you why.cus you want to know right ?? OK Take your maribou jig and put it in a cup or bowl of water move it around,it looks like a colored stick and it will for awhile.Take the same jig or a differant one wash it then rinse it, put it in the cup or bowl and look at the differance, the one you washed fluffs out and the feathers move all over the place when you wiggle it or move it around, they have scent free soap out there,I just used lemon joy no reason it was what my wife had and was handy.Try it,it really does make a differance.
