Default Hood Canal - Salty Divers ?

I am headed to Hoodsport for the weekend to dive. According to the web site for Washington it looks like crabing is closed until July 1st. Can anyone confirm that? Also is anything else open for spearing or pluking?

If anyone has been there lately how was the VIS?

Hoodsport is a good dive. lots of fun stuff to look at, where are you going to dive?

sorry I dont know of anything open to take and havent dove there since November. I know some sites that you can print maps of the dive sites.

I live about 30 min. North of hoodsport. You can dive, at least there are people diving, but nothing is open, sorry. The wonderful algea blooms and low O2 are making life cruddy in the canal, and there really is no end in sight.

Best dive is just north of Hoodsport. It's the wall at a place called Sun (or Sund) Rock.

All fishing is closed in the canal at this time. You still can take clams and oysters though (on the right beach).

Fishers asked to report tagged crab in Hood Canal

POINT WHITNEY – If you catch a Dungeness crab in Hood Canal this year with a bright green tag inserted into the underside of the shell, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) wants to know about it.

Since April, WDFW and the Skokomish Tribe have been tagging and releasing Dungeness crab at five index stations in Hood Canal – Lynch Cove, Tahuya, Annas Bay, Lilliwaup, and Scenic Beach.

“This tagging study is part of a research project designed to gain a better understanding of crab movement in relation to low dissolved oxygen events in southern Hood Canal,” said Therese Cain, area crab management biologist. “This is a joint effort and we’re asking for joint participation.”

Sport or tribal fishers who catch a crab bearing the distinctive green tag are asked to call the department toll free at (866) 859-8439 and report the tag number along with the date, location, and depth of capture.

“Latitude and longitude coordinates are particularly helpful. However, if those coordinates are not available, distance and direction from the nearest landmark are valuable information”, Cain said.

Fishers are free to keep tagged, legal-sized male crab during open periods, but are asked to report the tag information from those crab. However, tags should not be removed from crab – such as female, softshell or undersized crab – that cannot legally be retained and must be returned to the water.

Thanks all for the information. I have dove the canal many times. Friday and Sat VIS was off the charts for the canal. Sat the water was glassy all day and the sun was out. We dove Sunrise this time. I have been to Sund rock many many times. Sat they only had three drivers at Sund Rock. Would have been great. Sun was a different story. It rained most of the night and the VIS down to 40 feet was horrible. Plus the jellies from 20-30 feet was like being in an astoroid field. Still got some great diving in even if I could kill anything.

OK, so you mean the vis from the surface down to 40 feet of depth was crud? or the vis was 40 feet. 40 feet sounds like paradise to me with the 5-10 we get here on a good day.
