Washington State this weekend
I'm having difficulty lining up someone to fish with locally this weekend, So I'm thinking of finally trying our neighbor to the north. I was wondering if anyone had any information for a bank maggot to try and catch some doggies or nooks within a reasonable (2 1/2 hr) distance from portland. I would like to find a place with a little elbow room 15-30 yards between fishers is fine though. Any ideas would be helpful, if you don't want to post, just fire me an Email.
Thanks in advance

Re: Washington State this weekend
Courtesy of the Tacoma Paper....I will either be down at the Barrier Dam or Satsop River on Friday and Saturday. I have my blackmouth tourney on Sunday. Look for the green ball cap that says "Cancun" and the neoprene brown Cabela's Waders. The Satsop has the room that you were wanting, but the Cowlitz is elbow to @sshole down there. I don't see how they can say the bank anglers are slaying the fish there either. It's the same people everyday who have no job fishing there that's catching one or two and that's all I know of catching any silvers. Plus the river has gone way up making wading a lot tougher. Still a nice river though.
Saltwater salmon angling has been hot on Hood Canal and North Puget Sound, and not bad around Tacoma, observers say.
Meanwhile, river fishing for salmon was good to excellent in many places, giving anglers a wide choice of places to fish.
The details:
SALT WATER
Hood Canal - Lots of chum salmon in the southern canal, and fishing has been "great - really good," said Vicki Setera of Cushman Boats in Hoodsport. Boaters and bankers both doing well right in front of the Hoodsport Hatchery, but the number of anglers there has increased dramatically.
North Puget Sound area - Blackmouth fishing has been good in areas 9 and 8-1, said Mike Chamberlain of Ted's Sports Center near Lynnwood. Fish have been hitting off Possession Bar, Scatchet Head, Point No Point and Jefferson Head, mostly 5-7 pounds, occasionally 10-12. Largest have come from around Port Townsend. Lots of sublegals. In Area 8-1, anglers have found fish around Baby Island, Greenbank and Polnell Point.
Tacoma - Some nice blackmouth being caught off the claybanks, from just-legal to about 10 pounds, said Tom Cromie of the Point Defiance Boathouse & Marina. Best period is from just before high tide through the start of the ebb. Trolling and mooching both working.
South Sound - Slow. "I don't know anybody who's been going out," said Tip Jones of Tom's Outboard in Olympia.
RIVERS
North Puget Sound area - The Snohomish and Skykomish are low and clear, and fishing is tough, Mike Chamberlain said. The chums there have been in the rivers a long time, and some are getting pretty fuzzy-looking, he said. Not a lot of new fish. Rain is needed. The Skagit, on the other hand, has enough flow to bring bright fish in, and anglers have been doing well on them in the Rockport-to-Marblemount area.
Green - Silvers are turning dark and fishing for them has slowed, said Jeff Boggs of Auburn Sports & Marine. Chums starting to come in.
Puyallup - The water is in good shape, and anglers have been picking up a few chums around Fifth Street in Puyallup, according to Great Northwest Fishing & Archery on the Puyallup River Road. A few silvers still showing, too.
Cowlitz - Fishing for hatchery silvers remains hot below the barrier dam, said Joe Hymer of the Department of Fish and Wildlife's Vancouver office. Through Saturday, 10,400 adult silvers had been recycled to the barrier dam boat ramp. Additionally, more than 18,400 adult and 5,700 jack coho had been released into the upper Cowlitz.
Kalama - Still producing hatchery silvers, Hymer said. Boaters have done best, averaging nearly a fish per rod last week.
Lewis - A little slower for hatchery silvers last week, Hymer said, but river flows increased for part of the week.
Olympic coast - Still lots of silvers and kings, still not much water, said Bob Gooding of Olympic Sporting Goods in Forks.

Re: Washington State this weekend
Thanks Yall,
I think the Satsop seems more appealing, How much private access is there? Is there a large Chum run? I'm assuming it's probablly at the 2 1/2 hour driving limit from portland, but that's cool, I'm sure it's about the same distance from seattle and pressure would probablly be less. How big of a river is it? I'm looking forward to this weekend,

Re: Washington State this weekend
The river was pretty low and it was very clear. I went on the assumption that they had a decent run there. I am going back because it was a nice river...it's not too wide...about 30-45 yards wide in various places. Plenty of places to fish. You will see the cars. My brother hooked a very nice chinook there on Saturday but couldn't land him. We had several bites, but no fish on the bank. It was slow on Sunday so we didn't stay but for an hour. We had some rain so it maybe brought the level up. I know Osprey has fished it it the past, but I don't know he he did because he was in his driftboat. As far as I know, Chinook, Silvers, and Chums are in there. Otherwise, why the hell have I been going there?..lol lol Still debating on going to the Cowlitz a couple more times. The Satsop looks like it would be a good steelhead river when they start to run, but I don't know how the run is there, as I just started fishing this river last weekend. People I saw were bottom bouncing eggs or corkies and yarn. One driftboat had a nice stringer of salmon and they were using corkies and yarn. Looked like the color pink was their ticket.

Re: Washington State this weekend
Drift boat??? what ever
Rams I would say try the Satsop,I beleive Dan S. posted directions earier in the week under some Satsop post that was probably started by some cousin uncle brother red neck if you can't find them e-mail me and I'll hook you up
Found it here it is
I'll get grief for posting this, but that's ok. From oly, hit Hwy 101 toward Shelton/Ocean Beaches. At the Hwy 8/Hwy 101 North exit, stay on Hwy 8 toward the Ocean Beaches/Montesano/Aberdeen side. Go through McCleary and Elma and exit to the right at Satsop. Go to the stop, and turn left in Satsop. Go a ways and turn right up the hill before you get to the bridge. This road parallels the east fork and goes all the way up to Schaeffer park. There's spotty access all the way up to the park. Continue up the same road past the park, and you'll see the cars parked to access the east fork at Decker creek and the s-curves. Keep going and you'll reach the road that parallels the east and west forks (turn left or southbound) and gives you access to the forks hole and eventually leads you back into Brady and Hwy 8 (or hwy 12). If you turn left off the highway at Satsop (coming from Oly) you can access the confluence of the Satsop and Chehalis by turning right before you get to the bridge over the Chehalis.
Bring your heavy gear, as the Chum-lords have made their way to the Satsop and you don't want none of that action with no 10 lb. test! Good luck.
Me again
My only suggestion would be to take the Rochester exit 88# follow this to Elma and take the Brady Satsop exit it will save you half an hour.

Re: Washington State this weekend
Os, how would the directions change coming from the S on 12?
Yall, are you going to be there this Saturday? It'd be fun to hook up. If I leave home at 5:00 I probablly won't even get there until 7:30 - 8:00.

Re: Washington State this weekend
If you are going down that way, then maybe we could hookup and fishon. Depends on what time I make it down there myself. I have usually been getting down there between 8 and 9 myself. I don't think your directions will change. Get off at the Satsop exit, street, or whatever it is. Go to the stop sign and to the left you should see a shell gas station. Turn left at that stop sign. Go through the town, but don't blink..lol Go over the railroad tracks. You should see a trussel bridge in the distance as you go. On the left there is a nursery (flowers, etc.) that's where you turn right. Go up the hill and watch your speed because they are nasty curves. You will see a cemetary on your right as you go, and then you should see the river on your left...keep going until you see places to pull off the road. We will be in a 89 white honda accord. If you see the car, then you know that's where me and bro are. Just follow the sounds of the banjo and boisterous cursing, and the cracking of the tabs on the cans... B.Y.O.B......but I may have a couple to spare.
