North Coast Rendezvous
OK, I need help! (boy, do I!) Anyway, we have the very prestigious "North Coast Rendezvous" the next couple of days and I'm really wanting to do well for this event.
The trouble is, I don't know exactly where to go to get these guys into fish! It's driving me NUTS!!!
Any help out there???
If you're not familiar with the "Rendezvous" let me give you some background on this very worthwhile event:
It is sponsored through the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation and this is the 16th year of this event!
The registration fee is $500 per angler for two days of fishing and guides donate their boat, gear and time to the event.
During the past 16 years, the Oregon Wildlife Heritage Foundation has generated over $317,000.00 for projects here on the North Coast.
This years funds will be used for the Wilson and Nestucca Rivers Steelhead broodstock programs.

Re: North Coast Rendezvous
Boy Marty I wish that I could help you out. I know several bank fishing holes on the Wilson that would have a chance of producing a fish but that doesn't help you at all. It's a tough call but I've heard a few positive reports from the Nestucca. Good luck getting your clients into fish.

Re: North Coast Rendezvous
Well, if'n I WAS a filthy-rich guy, supporting a good cause like that, I'd be just as interested in some nice scenery, good company and the good cause - hooking a fish is just a bonus, right ?
I think it would be appropriate to hit the Wilson one day and the Nestucca the next, if that's where the proceeds go. If I was such a philanthropic soul, I'd appreciate that.

Re: North Coast Rendezvous
Marty,
Don't forget to wear your lucky hat!
It seems strange that you ask us where the fish will be this weekend.
You are on the water all the time and see whats going on.
You are the expert! We should be asking YOU where the fish are at.
I heard a couple of nice fish caught on the Wilson between Donaldsons and take out-sollie smith today!
Also heard that fish were coming in in Pacific City.
Alot of BLACK fish too.
I figure tide water will be best this weekend.
Catch a big one for me, Marty.
I wish you luck, competition will be fierce.
But you make it look soooo easy.
And don't forget your lucky HAT!
Thanks,
Marie

Re: North Coast Rendezvous
I know, I have it handled where to go, what to do, it's just way too much pressure I put on myself for this event!
But, it is a good time and a very good cause!
My favorite river went up almost a half a foot overnight, so that's where I'm off to.
It's gonna be too low again by tomorrow (if the forecast remains true)
I'll give you the full report.

Re: North Coast Rendezvous
Day one, 4 take downs, 2 on, both lost!
Better luck tomorrow!
I don't think I'll win the trophy this year!

Re: North Coast Rendezvous
Marty how about an update on the event. Living vicariously through your experience. I think I'm done for the season. I might have to try and catch some of those oversized trout (Steelhead) this year. Thanks and Tight Lines everyone!

Re: North Coast Rendezvous
The Trask River produced a couple of nice 35 pound hens today. The reason I know is I had a customer come in who was part of the HF. He said the first fish weighed in at 35 pounds, his was 34 3/4 pounds. It was a hen and you should see the eggs. Hes asked me to cure them for him, since he caught the hen with MY EGG NECTAR! He was so excited.
He said he'd been fishless for a long time. I remember when he came in and shyly asked me if HE used the egg nectar, that it would be just like using MY eggs? I looked him in the eye and said, "Oh yes" "You'll be amazed".
When he came in holding a bag full of eggs 4 3/4 pounds worth, HE WAS BEAMING! I'll never forget that look.
He made my day.

Re: North Coast Rendezvous
I fished out of Garibaldi today and watched a lot of guides go fishless. Even worse, several guides never untied their boats from the dock. Too bad. The weather was outstanding and there were fish to be had. I had 4 take downs, 2 on and a 36.5 pound hen in the boat. At 1:30 the fish checker had seen 11 fish and I know there were others still riding around in boats.
With pressure so low I can experiment with presentation. My bites have all been very light and mostly on slow, wide turns that I wouldn't have been able to make if there were more than two or three boats around.

Re: North Coast Rendezvous
Day 2, went down the Nestucca again, had 3 grabs, one rod to the water then gone! Nothing hooked.
My congratulations to the winning guides:
3rd place: Bob Toman
2nd place: Steve Burt
1rst place: Terry Mulkey
There were a total of 6 fish caught on day 1 and another 14 fish today.
My sincere thanks to all who participated and were involved in this worthwhile event!
Maybe it'll be my turn next year!

Re: North Coast Rendezvous
Marty; I think it is great that you and a bunch of other guides donate your time to such a good program. Fishing may have been slow, but I bet the people you fished had a great time!!!!! Keep up the good work. RW

Re: North Coast Rendezvous
I hear the Terry Mulkey caught the biggest fish weighing in at 35 pounds!
Rumor says he was using Marie's New
Shrimp Scent. We are trying to locate
Terry Mulkey today and ask him.
Congratulations Terry!
