Default Tailing Glove?

Anyone used or seen a glove specifically designed to assist with "tailing" a fish? When I bank fish, I hate to carry a net. The problem is, those damn fish are slippery? I have looked through fishing store catalog, but to no avail. Any suggestions. "drifter"

I usually use a wool glove, it seems to work well. Good luck!

Hey Drifter!

Yes, I do use a tailing glove during the native steelhead season. I don't even carry my net in the boat! (I personally feel that fish that are going to be released should not be netted) The trouble is, a guy gave me the glove I have, (it's just awesome) and I'll have to find out where to get one and get back to you!

Those steel mesh fillet gloves are great for tailing sturgeon.

A light cotton glove works well and you can tie knots with them on.

Just make sure your glove is wet before grabbing the tail so that you remove less slime from the fish.

drifter,

Bank fishing is all I do so I've had some experience with tailing fish. As long as you have some cloth on your hand, you will greatly improve chances of "gripping" the fish. I use whatever glove I'm wearing at the time (wool or fleece). If it's too warm for gloves, I still carry an extra set in my vest. Just slip one on during the fight. Now that's some fun when you've got a big steelie on!

I've also heard of guys wearing bandanas around their necks and simply warping it around their palm when ready to tail a fish. ODFW uses cotton gloves for tailing fish and those work too.

I've seen the special gloves designed for tailing fish and I'm sure those work too. But why pay a lot for those when a fingerless pair of woll goves will cost you $6?

good luck - Mike H

I use a Whizard handguard glove. It is made of Kevlar, stainless steel and nylon. It is cut proof and puncture proof and does not harm the fish. Great glove for me.

A plain white cotton glove works great. Keep one in my pocket all the time.
