elk question?
Has/Does anyone hunt(ed) the Diamond Peak or Mt. Thielsen wilderness areas for elk? I am thinking about hitting these areas this fall and was wondering if anyone has any information they would kindly pass along. thanks

Re: elk question?
yes, the area you are talking about is large. in between the 2 wilderness areas is the oregon cascades recreation area, basicly another wilderness area, tying everything together. what access are you looking at, or where are you planning to set up camp.

Re: elk question?
Has anyone been into the snake river unit and seen or done good with the elk in the last few years. We used to hunt that a lot until the elk started to decline. Any bear hunters here see any elk this spring over there?

that would be in the oregon cascades recreation area. i have hunter the area a lot. the mushroom pickers have ruined most of the hunting and what is left is really crowded. there are still some areas back in a few miles that do not get a lot of pressure, but you will need to be the 2 miles in before you will start seeing fresh sign. if your still interested i can give you some starting points. do you have the district ranger map

Re: elk question?
spot one, 5825 rd east side of big marsh, park near the junction of the 090 rd head up hill to the south, hunt the ridge that ends at cappy mountain. spot 2 bingham lakes, spot 3 the potholes north west of nip and tuck lakes. and cowhorn ridge. the farther you get back in the better your chances are. but the farther you have to pack them out. in the nip and tuck area look in sections 20,16,17,4,5,6,8,9, off the 5825 sections 36,1,2,11,12 if i was hunting this general area that is where i would spend every day and have in years past.

Re: elk question?
Are there many good bulls in those areas or just lots of elk, which means cows and calves and spikes?

Re: elk question?
if you have no experience hunting the high cascade wilderness, hunt with someone that has. there are elk in the areas i posted. you might hunt 7 days and never see anything but fresh tracks, but the areas are where the elk get pushed to by all the other pressure, hunters, mushroom pickers, etc. the elk are up in this country eating mushrooms , so if it is wet or snowing your odds go up
