GPS suggestions?
I'm looking to purchase a new hand held GPS, can anyone suggest units to look at? I'm looking for a basic unit for use on Rivers, roads, and some off-shore. Not looking to spend alot of money.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions,
-Goodkarma

Re: GPS suggestions?
Use the search function for all the information you need. It will probably show magellan meridian marine (My favorite) or the Garmin mapsend 76S as the top picks.

Re: GPS suggestions?
Chummer is right, and not only that, you'll pick up a few contacts you can write to while you're making your decision.

Garmin 176 c largest color hand held with chips also capable of topos and road maps for land use. Had mine for 3 years and love it.

Re: GPS suggestions?
The Magellan Sportreck is a basic (no map features) GPS that floats. Priced anywhere from $128 to 159. The comprabale Garmin unit is the GPS 72 and is priced about the same.

Re: GPS suggestions?
I picked up a Garmin Etrex on a recent trip to Cabo and operated it with one hand 32 miles offshore in a 21 foot boat while watching the baits...
I've decided to give my Magellan to my daughter.
That little thing was extraordinary...

Re: GPS suggestions?
I have the Garmin mapsend 76S and I do like it but just to let you know, I usally have the base map turned off so that I can see the tracks, I use mine for on the water use primarily, and it still shows the bouys with the base map turned off. If you are using it to navigate around the country the base map is good. If I was to buy another I probably wouldn't get the 76-S for my use, I would probably get the GPS-76 the differance is the 76-s has 24 megs of storage for upgrading the base map and the 76 only has I think 8 megs and the 76 is about 100.00 cheaper.

Re: GPS suggestions?
I'm trying to decide between the 76S and 176C. Garmin has a $100 rebate on the 176C which puts it at just above $400. I think for boating the 176C would be great although a little clumsy to carry around.
Grasshopper, do you have a bluechart chip for yours? If so how do like it?
