Default My Strike indicators sink

I tied a bunch (like 20..ya never know when you might need them). And they all sink!!!!!! I used some yarn I got from Clarks Stone fly table @ the outdoor show. Is it the wrong yarn. I used little gaskets and thread wraps. I feel I am a good tyer. Come on, I tye size 18 flies all the time. But can I make a strike indicator ....NOOOOOOO not me.

Whats my problem!! Help........please.......I am begging you!!! Some one! Can some one lend a brother a hand! Can't we just all get along.

If I can;t do this, then I am going to start fishing w/corkies!!!

Sinking in Central Oregon

1) Are you treating the indicator's with a floatant?
2) How much weight are you using on the fly?

Remember, the indicator is just that, not a float. Try some different types of yarn, since some will naturally absorb water and some won't. Natural fibers, like wool, have good floatation and water repellancy.

With that kind of material you have to add floatant to keep it up....just like you would a Clark stone fly.

Try polypropelene(spelling?)yarn, or better yet, macrame rope that you comb out. If it still sinks, treat with Watershed or mucilin. Also I use nylon thread to make the loop instead of rubber grommets. Makes them a little lighter.

Treat them with Flyagra. (Of course, floating for over four hours is a serious condition and you should probably just give up for the day, as you're not getting any.)

After trying all of the above, and you are still not satisfied, go back to corkies and a toothpick.

Or dare i say a balloon. It works unless you need to cast over 40 yards(then it hangs in the wind a little to much). They worked like a charm for winter steelhead.

I've heard the same thing. Small waterballoons just barely inflated are supposed to float like...a ballon.

i find yarn has to much wind resistence when casting. I switched to foam/balsa indicators like fish [whoopsydaisies!] brand they cast easier and hold up flies better.
