Bahamas?
We are looking at going to the Bahamas in August. Is that a bad time?
Looking at the weather it looks like it rains there most of the year. Is it always raining or does the sky just unload for a day here and there but the sun is out the rest of the time?

Re: Bahamas?
Hurricane season. August thru October are peak months. Just something to keep in mind.

Ditto
If you decide to go make sure you get the insurance. If your staying at a resort you might check to see if they have a "hurricane policy". Last July we were in the Caribbean when Hurrcaine Dennis came through. Not really a big deal since it just "grazed" us but ended up getting comp'ed 3 free nights since the resort was pretty much shut down. The bad part was the 36 hours it took to get home due to delays and such.
On the up side, it's the off season and it's not very crowded.

Re: Bahamas?
Yeah, the whole hurricane season thing is a concern. Maybe that is why the rain fall is so heavy then. It is pretty heavy year round.
Was just giving a friend who is thinking about having kids some advice and told her to not have kids until her and her husband go on at least one vacation. Because we never did. So I decided that we needed to do this....without the kids. So come hell or high water I will be drinking margaritas in a speedo this year! But the wife wont let me wear a speedo.

Re: Bahamas?
Everyone should do it once. We finally went to Jamaica and love it down there. We will scrimp and save to go back every year if we can. 6 to 10 days is about right. I'd go for a couple, 3 weeks if I could swing it. Have fun.

Re: Bahamas?
Well it looks like it will be Jamaica.
Reading all the reviews of various places though it seems like if you go in the water the locals swarm you trying to sell you neclaces and drugs. If I wear my speedo they should no that I have no where to put my money so hopefully they will leave me alone.
Was looking at Sandals resorts but I think I found several better cheaper all-inclusive resorts.

Re: Bahamas?
2LEYS - We do the Sandals gig and it's not real cheap. Just make sure it's a true "All-inclusive". They don't always mean the same thing.
There will be vendors that want to sell you things. If you just say "no thank you" they will leave you alone. They are just trying to make a living and I made it a point to at least talk to them. I made friends with several of them and they were pretty cool actually. I'd even bring them a beer now and then. And yes they will ask if you like to "party" or if you needed "anything" they would take care of you. All I said was Rum was all I needed, and I was never asked again.
Passports are helpful, bring dollars for tips at the airport and the dirvers.
If you want any info shoot me a PM. We've been there twice in the last year.

Re: Bahamas?
Another vote for Sandals. The wife and I have been to St. Lucia (Grand St. Lucian) and Antigua. Loved them both. Would love to go back except we found a small bed/breakfast place in Tulum that we will probably visit a few more times.

Re: Bahamas?
Forget Jamaica. The Bahamas is way better. More fish, cleaner water. Go to the out islands - Exumas, etc. Eat as much grouper and conch as you can fit in your stomach.

Re: Bahamas?
Now it looks like Cancun. Maybe. I want to go to one of the smaller less populated islands but airfare is a lot more expensive than to Jamaica, The Bahammas and Cancun.
I get the impression that Jamaica is a has been place that is now a huge crowded tourist trap like Hawaii. Not sure I want to go there.

Re: Bahamas?
Having fished in Florida and the Bahamas for many years I'd say August is not really hurricane season. Sure, it's possible but for the most part that's the calmest time of the year (and hot as hell). If you are going at that time of year I'd just make sure that whatever boat you are spending time on has SHADE. Also, the days are much more bearable if you can fit a little skin or scuba diving in between your fishing. Getting in the water is the best way to cool off. Spear fishing is great over there but you can't use tanks.
Forgot to comment on the rain. That time of the year it's common for afternoon thunderstorms but it's pretty rare to have rain all day long. It's the sort of thing where you take cover for 30 minutes and then it's back to the sun. I'd be much more concerned with staying cool than staying dry.
