Default John Day Report

Just got back from the John Day yesterday. Spent the 22nd -24th at Phillipi up river from Le Page. The water was high and brown. Looked like chocolate milk. The fishing was in a word-terrible. Fished hard for Channel Cats and SMB and Crappie. We managed two 3-4 pound cats, and 4-5 dink SMB. No Crappie.

Had slight drizzle and some heavy rain and t-storms most of the time we were there. Camping was good, and it was nice to get out of the valley.

Of note the showers and sinks are not turned on at Phillipi when we left,a notice was posted about failing a water standard. Sounded like the water was safe unless you were an infant, elderly, or had a depressed immune system. We were none of the above and used the water and were/are fine. New boat docks at Phillipi are nice.

I would not head up there to fish until the water levels drop to around 3500 CFS.

Thanks for the report. The John Day has no flood/snow melt control dam's at all...so on a heavy snow pack year you have to wait til late June or July before the River is in good fishing condition.
