Making a Career Change! Ideas, Opportunities...?
My wife has a bachelors degree in Mathematics with a masters degree in Education. The school system in Oregon is tumbling downhill and the teachers are paying the price. She has been teaching high school math and is seriously looking for a career change. (Please don’t hijack the thread)
Ifish is a great resource; hundreds of people with very diverse backgrounds and opportunities.
If you own your own business, work for a company that needs help or just have a good idea please let me know. Not necessarily looking for something directly related to education, any position requiring a very intelligent strong communicator would be excellent.
Thanks,
Dan

Re: Making a Career Change! Ideas, Opportunities...?
Oh, thanks for the info. I am looking at a math job in Oregon because Idaho has the most anti-education legislature in the country. Look at the OPM (office of personnel management) website. They list all of the federal government jobs, and a lot of those jobs are for math related positions. As my brother's wife says from their home on the puget sound: "you should work for the government, Bill"

Strong communicator?
A sales and or marketing position.
There are plenty of good opportunities that pay above average to way above average, for sales people out there and there always will be.
You just have to weed out all the thousands of horrible sales opportunities to get to them but, companies pay good money for a strong comunicator/negotiator who possesses the characteristics of polite persuasion.
I've been in sales for 15 years and it has afforded me and my family a wonderful life of which I am very thankful for.
Good luck on the search!

With a math and teaching background I might recommend a media research / marketing position. Entry level pay will most likely be in line with what she's been making and depending on size of organization and her ability to network she can be making many times more than that.

Teachers make great Managers. She could open her own Papa Murphy or other chain store. Her math skills would help with the buisness end and the teaching skills will help with the personel. Have her find a buisness that she enjoys and do a little research. Good Luck.

Re: Making a Career Change! Ideas, Opportunities...?
depending on her age i would reccommend Intel or someother semiconductor company. I used to work at LSI logic and they hired matmatic majors for there CMP process areas. Both of the engineers were mathmatics majors actually.
I wold look for a free-lance opoportunity like tutoring or something related to education. Perhaps a think tank that focuses on education, or a lobbyst group that pushes education. several small part time jobs can add up to a full time job.
then there is always poker like you see on TV. Its basically just applied math. If she can just play the odds then she should be on TV in no time

Re: Making a Career Change! Ideas, Opportunities...?
I have to agree with8-gauge. Good teachers usually make good sales and marketing reps. The trick is to find a company that is top notch and appreciates its employees. My company has hired a fair number of burned out teachers and they either ended up branch managers for high 5 figure salaries or sales account managers ( more like pharmaceutical reps) for good 6 figure incomes.) Typically mid-high 30s to start.
