Default Just another Halibut Rig.....

I know that there are lots of different ways to rig up for Halibut, probably some even better than this way. I also know that a lot of "Saltier" folks may have much better ways of catching fish and this is a "No-Brainer", but here goes anyways.....

I definitely can't claim the design of this Halibut rig, it's a little of Bait Boy's and Pilar's and a little modifications from me.

The Rig consists of 20-inches of 150-pound mono, 2 9/0 "J" Hooks, a "Glow in the Dark Hootchie", 80-Pound Barrel swivels, and 20-inches of "Tuna Cord" aka Hand Lines and a large Duo lock (for your lead).

I start with the hooks, both 9/0; I like to make my Crimp 2-inches above the eye of my lower hook, this way it keeps my bait from "Scrunching".

When I rig my bait I rig it "Salmon Style", I notice a lot of guys rig it "Sturgeon Style", but I found (thanks to Bait Boy) that on the drop it starts to tear up the bait rigged "Sturgeon Style".

I then loop a large rubber band around the shank of the hook and mono leader to keep the top hook from moving.

A little stretchy thread to hold the bait tight to the leader and keep the hooks in the proper position. Don't get too carried away with the tread, I've found that sometimes a natural bait works better than a bait that has a lot of "Extra's".

When dropping I find that engaging the motor for the first 20' of the drop keeps any tangles to a minimum.

If rigged right it WILL equal this:

Good luck!

Thanks AC. some questions:

It looks like the top0 hook slides on the leader, i.e., it's not fastened in place. correct?

Do you put the weight on a dropper line or right at the clip?

Do you hit the glow in the dark hootchie with a flash before dropping it? I think I've heard of doing that, but I never have.

thanks

You know I think that might work, more than 1 way to catch a Halibut, but watch out!, a Chinook might think it's for him.

I have some rigged pretty close to that, though not with tuna cord, but I like the cord idea. There is a lot of variations on how to make a halibut leader.

I like my hoochie turned around so it gets more action when I jig the bottom as well as the glow in the dark aid.

Yep, till I use the rubber band to hold it in place.

Weight goes on the clip, no dropper.

Nope, I'm sure they are plenty charged just by the amount of daylight they are exposed to. Just make sure to store your "Glow in the dark" gear in the dark at home, the UV light breaks the Luminescent quality's very very quickly.

Thanks Andy, I'll have to try that. I've been using spreader bars, but always want to try new ideas and know I have lots to learn.

Thanks for the 411! Why do you use the tuna cord and not just a stretch of monofilament?

Abrasion resistance for that ball hammering up and down all day. Its also nice to hang on to when you have the fish boatside
