Catching the fish, or the fisherman?
Here's one that's been bugging this rookie for a while now.
I've read the threads about pink worms & jigs. But when I ask friends about using them they acted like I was making this stuff up.
When I thought about making rags and trying those, another friend admited they never worked for him.
So, my question is simply this. Is most of the stuff on the wall at SW, or FMS to attract the fish, or fisherman?
Should I just stick to Corkie & yarn, or experiment a bit?

Fish don't have wallets. That should be your first clue.

Re: Catching the fish, or the fisherman?
The more techniques you know, the more conditions you will be able to use the ideal bait for those conditions. That means you will catch more fish. I have not used rags, but I use just about everything else. In fact, I often carry 4 rods into a hole; spinner, bobber, drift and fly, and several times this year I have caught fish on all 4 rods in the same day. 4 rods is overkill, but it is convnenient. Diversify.

All techniques will catch fish. Find out which ones you like and have confidence and you should do well. Lots of marketing out there and it can be a little over whelming but it's not a bad idea to learn to drift fish.

I use rags to clean the grease off my hands after changing the oil.

Re: Catching the fish, or the fisherman?
Having a diversity of tactics available to you will land more fish, provided you know when and where to use them. For a rookie, pick one or two techniques, learn all you can about them and fish them until you can confidently catch fish. Once you're confident in your catching abilities, then begin exploring other techniques. Every technique and presentation has its place. Learning when and where it will work better than something else is a skill that develops with time and experience. Given the right knowledge and a bit of luck, even a piece of bacon will catch a fish.

Re: Catching the fish, or the fisherman?
I read some were the Rag was a fluke made by two construction workers that wanted to fish but didn't have much tackle with them. And the jig book said that was a well lets try this and see what happen so given this I would say try everthing you never know what could happen maybe you'll be the next to discover a new trend! Under the right conditions, Rags can be very deadly. They are cheap too, especially if you make your own at home.

Re: Catching the fish, or the fisherman?
I like rags and pink worms both. I like rags both because they work but also because of the inherent floatation I lose a lot less hooks than I did with corky/yarn set ups.
As for worms, they can be deadly on aggressive fish. I typically hook up the first or second cast if there is a worm biter in the hole.

Yea, most of the stuff is to attract the fishermen. Some of it is made for the fish.
A picture is worth a thousands words:
I caught these two on my last trip out.

Re: Catching the fish, or the fisherman?
So what is the best method to use the pink worm? Should you use the entire length of a 4"-5" pink worm or do you use smaller worms and use it on a jig head? Is it better to drift fish?

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">I've caught one behind a diver, the rest have come on a jig under a float. I prefer the seducer little thumper which I believe is 3 1/2 inch with a 1/4 ounce first cast jig, I prefer white. Kinda like Mark's picture.

Re: Catching the fish, or the fisherman?
Hooker
I've had better luck drift fishing plastic worms when the water is up and moving. I like threading about 3" of a pink worm on a jig when the water has several feet of visibility. They both work excellent.

Re: Catching the fish, or the fisherman?
First it has to catch the fisherman, before it gets a chance to catch the fish.

Amp, you're right. Remember last springer season, the hot bait was bacon wrapped quickfish. Hey, whatever works for you.

Re: Catching the fish, or the fisherman?
I have a theroy that goes like this.
if you in the right place at the right time and you have your rig, corkie jig, what ever it is as long as it isnt so repulsive it makes fish back clear up to the beach, and your infront of a fish that is suicidal then your going to catch a fish.
I have seen some totally lost people fishing stuff that was so off the wall get fish that ya just sit there with your mouth open going ***.
the trick is finding something that works for you time after time consistantly and you have to find something your comfortable fishing. then learn to be proficient with it, and then you will do good regularly if the fish are there.
alot of people that I fish with spend more time second guessing them selves and switching colors or lures that they dont spend as much time in the water as they should.
corkie and yarn and hot shots have probably killed more fish then everything else on the market put together they are always my first shot when I hit the river.

That reminds me, I need to get the new fake herring gig with the velcro scent patch to try this year

Re: Catching the fish, or the fisherman?
Granted, there are innovations and great products (First cast Jigs, f'rinstance), but I've long been amused by those fishermen who have to have the 'latest and greatest.'
Having co-owned a small tackle shop in the past, I used to enjoy telling customers, "We have all the hot new lures for the same old fish!"
That said, I should confess that I am among the worst where "tackle lust" is concerend. Heck, I'm fully-equipped for species I've never fished for 'just in case' one day I might get the chance.
On the other hand, fisherfolk are great customers for those in the business of nourishing their addiction. It's no surprise they're called 'dealers' ....
