Lab rescue
I posted this in Life in Gen. also.
Any one know of a local Lab rescue. I have a friend that has a 2 year old male(fixed) that is to pushly with their small kids( nipps). And they want to put him down. I hate to see that.
Thanks

Re: Lab rescue
Cliff,
Is this lab pure? I would hate to see a young lab destroyed. Sounds like he just needs some training and house rules. I'm sure some young hunter here on Ifish would love to invest the time in training him.
If not I'll give him a bed until such an Ifisher hunter can be found. In the meantime he & "Chance" can keep each other company.

BTW: Had the new boat out??

I know what you mean, I hate to see that my self. If I did not have 5 dogs right now I would do the same.
Need to fish more and work less.

Re: Lab rescue
He is now a part of my family and is sitting at my feet as I type this. He is about a year and 3mos old, just nuetered and comes from a house with 4 kids and another dog. THere was just to much going on in the family to give him the attention he needs. It turns out that the family never set any boundries so he has been a little spoiled and too pushy. Get this, the dog has never been in water . That will change soon enough, I took him out in the boat last night. He was really interested in everything at the begining, then soon relaxing and falling a sleep . As we were out fishing a group of honkers flew by, I pointed towards them and the look in his eyes was screaming "birdy" he followed them till he couldn't see them anymore. At that point I realized this dog just may in fact hunt. Well his original name was Skeeter, I think I may change that name. His name may have to be Finn, with a funny story behind it. Dylan(Zodiac-fisherman) and I were talking about possible names and I said what do you think about finn? At that exact moment dylans rod takes a dive and we bonk a 20ish springer. With that being the only fish that we saw boated last night it may have been an omen.
I want to sincerely thank Bassin' for posting this on IFish . I am going to give him a couple of weeks to get used to me then the training will begin in preperation for fall. If anyone has some experience with training an older dog from ground zero please send me a PM or post it here. I have owned and trained dogs from puppies but this is my first attempt with an older dog. Thanks again Bassin'

Re: Lab rescue
THAT'S AWESOME NEWS!!! I knew it, it just sounded like he needed some attention. My wife will also glad to hear he's got a home....she looked at me kinda funny when I mentioned my conversation with Bassin to her.
All's well that ends well.

Re: Lab rescue
We have gotten good results with the few older dogs friends have picked up over the years so I wouldn't be to concerned about his age. At 15 months he is still a young dog. Get a good book, read it and be consistent.
My advice is to get the obedience fundamentals down pat before you start on the heavy duty retreiving work. Sit, Stay, Heel, and Come are the building blocks for what will come later. Start using the whistle in your obedience training.
Spend a lot of time with the dog to get his loyalty. Feed him yourself. While you can certainly get others to help you with his training you have to be the one directing the dog and calling the shots.
I found a female Lab at a county animal shelter for a fella many years ago that most certainly would have been euthanized had he not gotten her. She had just had a litter of pups and was the poorest looking specimen for a Lab you ever saw. I threw a glove for her at the shelter and she was nuts about retreiving, but couldn't do very much else.
That fella got that dog and she became one of the best hunting retreivers I have ever known. She lived for 11 years and in those years retreived several thousand ducks for him and his friends. That gentleman and I became best of friends and hunting companions all because of that dog.

Re: Lab rescue
There's also a guy out of Rainier - a former Ifisher, so I can't post his info since I dont' know what that the circumstances were that caused him to be a "former" ifsher. Send me a PM if you would like his contact info.

Re: Lab rescue
Rich, that's great news. Sounds like a great dog and I really like his name........that is the name of my black lab. My Skeeter is 11 years old now, but he still thinks he is young. Mine has never settled down enough to be able to go fishing with me unless we're trolling.
I bass fish a lot and at every cast he really wants out of the boat to go retrieve my lure; it gets annoying w/ his whining after every cast, so I just don't take him out anymore. Hopefully my next dog can sleep while out in the boat like your skeet (Finn) seems to be able to.
I've had him since 8 weeks old and had him in the boat a lot as a pup but he just has too much energy for sitting still. He is a great upland bird dog, though. He is very mellow in the house.
I will consider looking to the lab rescue for my next dog. Sounds like you have a winner there. Good luck and good fishing.

Re: Lab rescue
Good going. Your dog is not old to train. Just follow a good book and your experience and instinct. If he is very good dog I have a pro that could do wonders with him pm me if interested. Sounds like in his old home he was part of a "pack" and was simply enforceing his place in the heiracrchy. You as the alpha male have to enforce your dominance and that you don't allow any pushing others of the pack around. If you have small children make sure the dog doesn't try to dominate them or expect the kids to train the dog. Good Luck.
