Default Water pump service

What are your thoughts about have the lower unit water pump serviced. I had one shop tell me every 4 yrs another ssays every 2 yrs. To tell the truth I haven't had mine done. I guess being I haven't had any problems I just never thought about it. Any opinions on the boat works Wilsonville) for service? Not much to choose from in Salem fo OB motors.

IMHO change them based on your usage. If you use them in salt and suck up sand quite a bit I would change every couple years. Keep an eye on the discharge if it's weak at start-up or low idle it's time to replace it.

As for service, I did mine last year. They're a piece of cake. If you have any mechanical ability I'd give it a try.

Depends upon how much you use your boat and how careful you are about making sure you do not run the engine without proper water thruput.

It may last 4 year if not used alot and you're careful... usually get my ob impeller changed after 3 years ... use it about 40 hours per year. Have your service man show you the impeller so you can see the amount of wear.

I did mine yearly when I was water trapping. Now I do it every other year. I do it myself though.

If you can turn a wrench, you can do the job yourself. It'll save you money and all important time on the water.

As for how often to do it, which is cheaper: a new water pump or a new motor? Seriously though, keep an eye on the output. Also, think about where you run it. If your boat doesn't get into salt or you're very meticulous with the post salt washup, every couple of years should be fine.

17 years on my original water pump, and it's still going. And I've sucked up all kinds of crap into it.
Of course, now that I've bragged about it, it'll probably quit during my first springer trip.

Bought my 6hp Yamaha new in 1989--replaced the water pump myself in 2003 when water flow started to diminish. Just lucky I guess!

I've gotten lucky with mine lasting 9 yrs on a motor I had. Some service people I talked with say 3-5 years. I would hold out with that 5 yr mark as long as I took care of it like flushing it after a day in the salt.

1Pump: Your overdue, don't waist a springer day of fishing when you can get it done before.
