Default May 11th opener organizing group run

for those intersted.
Who will be in Newport at South Beach Marina to fish on the 11th 12th and 13th for Halibut. Thinking about tring to get as many boats to run out togeather to the ranch.
Planning to leave the dock by 5AM weather permitting and bar conditions allow us to get out. Should be on the deck by 7AM to 7:30 if we have good seas.
Anyone intersted?

I'll be launching out of Newport also for the 11th-13th running out to the ranch for some of that white gold. I'm planning on getting down there on the 10th to set crab traps and maybe a near shore Hali.

I will be there with crew for all three days as well. We will arrive the afternoon of the 10th. Tides, Bar and ocean conditions will dictate departure times. But I am optimistic and foresee clear sailing all three days.

We'll be heading out for all three days, too. Probably wait until there's a bit more light, so I'll take what's leftover.

By my count there are at least three Seahawks in this convoy!

I really want to make it, but it will probably be the 13th before I can get out.

Paul

Hey guys thanks for the offers. I got a seat, but I know theres a couple of others that could use the consideration and will do you right.

Does anybody NOT go to the chicken Ranch? Never been and I don't think I want to travel that far just yet. I'll be looking for some near shore activity. Would stonewall Banks (outside exclusion area) be a total waste of time?

Nothing wrong with poking around the exclusion area at stonewall. Plenty of halibut come off that big rock.

Lots of people like to run to the ranch and get there chicken and back in to dock in a hurry. It doesnt take that long, if your arms hold out, I think waiting for a little larger fish before bonking a chicken makes sense.

I will be riding on a NR first trip out, so I wont be getting there as fast as normal I hope I get there and back

I'm there the 12th but fishing for bait and brine spiders the first day and making the trip on the 13th.

Gary and his son Phil the fireman have been very gracious in providing winter quarters for the 'Kismet' up in Woodland. All of us are out of the tasty white meat.

This is gonna be fun.

Roy, yer gonna wish you had made the run to the Chicken ranch when some boats come back with Bluefin Tuna. Nice SST BTW, thanks you gave me an idea.

I could only post the free one, I think I have seen every SST (enhanced and otherwise) from Baja to Washington in the last couple of days.

I am gonna wish I had my boat when the radio cracks in the afternoon,

"Vessel "XXXXXXX" inbound with bluefin tuna onboard"

So with so many on the morning of the 11th.
Fly your Salty dog flag, launch togeather, get each others attention and lets make it a convoy of Salty Dogs flags leaving the marina by 5:30am.
----Herring Problem--- White Trophy 2052WA with Green Canvas, white arch with Furuno Radar. 4 people on board.

I've found that with all the launching and gear loading that it can be better to just get out of the marina then start hooking up with everyone on 78 on the VHF.

For All-Depth Hali days out of Newport there is usually a steady stream of boats heading for the Ranch.

I agree! Get away from the rush first. I'm just so excited the time has finally got here I just can't think straight.
I think you are right about the steady stream of boats.
Just thinking it might add some fun to the day as a group thing on the way out.

A tip for those who have not made the mad dash to the ranch before. At least this is what I do.

Aim for a spot about 5 miles south of the ranch until you get close enough to see the boats sitting on it. Then run north to the good fishing.

When you leave the jaws at Newport jog south on about a 210 or 200 course until most everyone is running out to the north of you. Then come to 240. Or you will be eating alot of wakes and getting passed on both sides. This run at times reminds me of the 4th July on the Columbia after the fireworks are over. It's crazy like a shootout lap at Talledega.

You can't have it to yourself but you can run in clean water if you run to the south of the main herd.

Looking like the Amy Marie will be sitting this opener out in dry dock. :depressed:

Bad day on the shake down cruise ...no fun watching from the sidelines after 6 months of planning....

May need to come down to wave at the outbound fleet, catch some herring from my little boat, and hand out some redfish id cards on the dock.

Pilar - thanks for the offer... boat fix is nothing that alot of $$$$ and alot of mechanic's time will fix (and a $25 transom seal part)

In the mean time, others have offered this waylayed Salty Pup a ride west.. so hope to join them for at least part of the rodeo. Still hope to get some herring & hand out redfish id cards in the docks.

Thanks again Jim & Dean for the ride offers.

Sorry to hear that Dale. I spent the whole winter trying to prevent that very thing and deal with known problems. For me summer is too short to have a broken boat. Maybe I have all the snakes rounded up.

You have your choice of rides .. include me on your list.

I'm going to have to sit it out also. Not boat problems, healing body parts.
For those that don't know, I wrecked my quad AGAIN!
This time it was a little worse tho. Broken back at T-12, nine broken ribs, bruised sternum, etc.

Hope to be able to get out in a coupla weeks, but I seem to be healing much slower nowadays

Catch one for the Gipper!

Hope everything heals up well for you, see you out there soon
I plan on starting at the N. Rockpile Lunker spot Fri. & Sat., then maybe head for the "Banana" Bank, or Chicken Ranch, if the Rockpile is slow as usual in early season.

It's been a while since I have been on here. I was regularly attending FA (fishaholics anonymous) and in recovery but I think I may have relapsed big. The Halcyon and her crew will be there!

Popeye
sorry to here that. Know how you feel.
Lost two years fishing one to a 3 wheeler and the next to a quad.
I was healing up slow to but found even if I had problems with taking out the trash I could still reel in my pole
I did throw 3 into the river before I could manage to hold on to them while casting.
Hope thing speed up for ya..

Add another Seahawk to the convoy.... Harpman will be their in a 22' Seahawk with a crew of 2 for Thurs, Fri... No flag yet and Brad is still working on my graphics... So just a plane old Black and Silver Seahawk with a goofy looking crew. I will have the radio on..

It may not be a Seahawk that gets there first guys.
You're joking A Seachicken get there first! Oops I meant a Seahawk. Only if everyone else is paddling a canoe.

Well with this many boats, lookin like there will be a steady line out to the ranch.
Who will be at the South Beach Launch on Wednesday night?
I should be arriving around 10Pm, So if someone needs help launching around that time frame, I'll be there to help after I get the ol-girl in her slip.Launching in the middle of the night can be a lot of fun if you haven't done it yet.
See Ya there!
