Default Being safe and keeping all your parts

Yesterday I took my wife up to foster for the day. As I was launching there was and feller there that had the top off of his motor and had what appeared to be a clothes line to start his motor. He would wrap the line around the motor and then around his hand trying to get it started. I took off and hit the water. Later on I came by and he was out on the lake and there ws another boat next to him. As I pulled along side I saw that his hand was wrapped up and bleeding siverly. His engine quit on him and he was trying to start it again when it backfired and pulled that rope back in. It took off two fingers and some flesh on his right hand. I grabbed a rope and towed him back to the boat launch were we met up with the ambulance.

So be safe! If the motor don't start, get it fixed. It ain't worth losing parts over.

Side note: I looked at his boat at the end of the day and noticed fishing line all wrapped up in his prop (there was quite a bit). Don't know if that had anything to do with his engine issue, but check your props.

Good point about not wrapping the rope around your hand.

The better alternative would be to improvise a handle for the starter rope. Perhaps a fish club, screwdriver or similar device.

Thanks for posting!

Thanks for sharing. Everyone should read this. Losing two fingers while trying to start a motor would make for a very bad day.

Perhaps he deserves a Darwin award?

That's right up there to wrapping the anchor line around your arm a few times when you are pulling it up to keep it from slipping (oops it caught on something - over you go).

Or how about those guys I saw shark fishing on ESPN's extreme sports show. The shark (mako, I think) had been sitting on the deck for a while and this brilliant guy decided to stick his hand down the shark's throat to get the hook out. Guess what - it wasn't dead just yet and bit down on his hand. His buddies had to pry the shark's mouth open and his hand was gushing blood.
