Friends could use your prayers
A couple of good friends, Derek & Corrine, had a baby, Audrey, last Saturday. They've known for a while that the baby has a heart defect that would have to be fixed. A few weeks ago they thought through testing that it could wait until the baby was 6 to 12 months old - a much better scenario. It has been a very rough week for them. Audrey has been unable to breath on her own, and the doctors have told them that her organs are going to start shutting down if they don't fix her heart/breathing problems. Tomorrow she goes in for a 6 hour heart surgery on her 7th day of life.
Please include their family in your prayers.

Re: Friends could use your prayers
She made it through her heart surgery, and they were very hopefull. Unfortunately she is still on a ventillator as she still has breathing difficulty. They are going to try backing off on how much oxygen they are giving her in hopes that her body will start working harder and perhaps overcome the problem. She's expected to be in the ICU for several more weeks at least. They've been told that if her body doesn't overcome this breathing issue that there isn't anything the doctors can do to fix it. We haven't asked what that means...
The good news is that her heart has been fixed and she won't need another heart surgery until she's much older, like 10 years old.
They know that alot of people are praying for them, and they are EXTREMELY appreciative of all the support they are getting.
I made them echilladas with homemade enchillada sauce one day. It was the day they found out that she had to have her surgery ASAP, and it had been a very stressful day for them. Everytime I see them they mention those enchilladas. Having a good home cooked meal was one thing that they needed that day. :depressed: Some of their other friends took it as a hint, and I guess they keep coming home to coolers of food.
Thanks for the prayers.

Many prayers for her and the family. What a difficult time.

Re: Friends could use your prayers
It sounds like there may be an imbalance in the O2/CO2 levels in the blood. High O2 and low CO2 knocks out the drive to breath, which could be why they are backing off of the O2. I will pray that her breathing problem gets corrected.

Update
Just thought I'd let you all know that Audrey was able to go home last Sunday. She is still on oxygen, and is having problems eating and keeping things down. The eating problem is blamed on the fact that for so long after being born she had tubes stuck down her throat (and nose, and into her arms, and... you get the idea). Apparently she has to learn how to eat and swallow, which has been made harder because she is tired.
Last I heard, Mom and Dad had decided that they were trying to get her to eat too much at a time and it was causing her to throw it back up. Since they've cut back she hasn't thrown up. She came home with a feeding tube so she is still getting nutrients.
For oxygen they are weaning her off of it slowly. The doctors said that it was up to mom and dad to decide when she needs it. So with these problems they are doing the best they can to get her to work at eating and breathing by herself, but because of the heart surgery they don't want her working too hard and getting exhausted.
It has been back and forth, but it looks like she is making progress.
Thanks to all for your prayers!
