Default Crack Down: Child Pornography

Hi all,
I have a friend who graduated from OIT and has just relocated up the the Portland area. He has a degree in some sort of hardware engineering. Anyways, lets get to the point. He sent out this message to some of his friends for help. And I figured Ifish would be a good pool of people to pull from. Here is the message he sent:

So I have been watching the news the past couple of weeks and it seems that Child Pornography is a growing problem on the internet. People using Newsgroups to exploit children. My self and a friend have decided to do something about it. We are in the process of designing a server side app to trace and track those who are attempting to obtain / provide this illegal content. If there are any coders out there who are willing to contribute to this project... Please drop me a line. Any ideas or suggestions on how this application should function... or suggestions on what features this application should contain... would be appreciated.

Thanks-
Jason

If you have any skills or suggestions, please shoot me a PM and I will put you in contact with him.

Thanks.
JL

Great Idea, get them any way we can. I don`t have the qualifications you need, but I wish I did, I would be all over this one!

I think it has already been done.

I've read in the paper any number of times that some federal agency arrested dozens of people in multiple contries who have been trafficing in child ****. How do they identify this scum? I think thru processes you just described.

That's not to discourage someone from building a better mousetrap. But seriously, I think the technology is already in use.

I think these issues are best left to law enforcement. Private citizens spying on other private citizens sounds like a bad idea to me.

My hats off to Jason, nothing wrong with a little extra "neighborhood watch" and if they are attempting to break the
law (and this aint exactly like speeding) who really cares (maybe some of you do) about "their" rights to privacy because once they cross, or try to cross that line, their rights as a private citizen is a moot point

Certainly a noble cause with good intentions, but it's also a legal nightmare. IMHO, it should be left to law enforcement, and judging by the rate that they nail people for it, they're having some success. There's a fine line between vigilance and vigilanteism, and it would be too easy to cross.

Sometimes the best of intentions can end in disasterous results for everyone involved.

Law enforcement doesnt develope the tools they use, they just use them. they rely on private companies and citizens to provide them with the equipment they need to do their duty. I say there is nothing wrong with developing a good tool for the police to use.

as far as privacy is concerned, I value mine and dont want anyone violating it. so that makes this a pretty trick project that I am unfortunately not qualified to help on.I wish them the best of luck.

I'm pretty sure there are several LE agencies with something similar.
