Re: WA multi season draw...
The results aren't up yet. Check again. Apparently they did the drawing today but later discovered some applications hadn't been entered. So they have to do it over. Results are supposed to be posted by Friday. That is the rumor I heard anyway.

Re: WA multi season draw...
WDFW is probably looking to see which people applied for the permit and crossing the names against the people who sent them nasty e-mails over thew starving elk situation and re-drawing to make sure they didn't draw.........lol

Re: WA multi season draw...
I called yesterday, and they said that the drawing was yesterday. Results would be up today... Straight from the region 5 office... I looked at 11:30 and it said i was unsuccessful... Then this afternoon the results were pulled...
I hope they had to redraw...

Re: WA multi season draw...
Results are posted. I drew the elk, but not deer. Didn't really want either. All I wanted was the points, so I could have a better chance next year. Dang my luck. My brother was lucky and didn't draw either one.

Re: WA multi season draw...
I didnt know this was on a point system.
I thought you could hunt any weapon. Not sure about units though.
If its on a point system, cant you enter certain #s to gain points without risk of being drawn.Just like special permits.
I never really checked into this,as I think its sort of a scam, and a way for wdfw to make more $ without increasing harvest.

Re: WA multi season draw...
Yes, you do accrue points, same as regular special permits.
You're right, if you draw you can hunt archery, muzzleloader, and rifle seasons. For elk you can hunt both western and eastern Wa.
I wouldn't think of it as a "scam." Hunters have asked for it, so they gave it to us. I like to see the WDFW make money any way they can. I'd rather have my money go to them than some other useless state agency like DSHS.

Re: WA multi season draw...
I'm a loser! There is a point system separate of normal draws. The tag is good for all general seasons statewide and you can put in for all controlled hunts east and westside. It's a sweet deal, maybe next year. I called and talked to Olympia and asked them the specifics.

No luck here...glad to make another contribution to the cause. I guess.
(now to decide on special hunt application)

No on elk. Yes on deer. Now I gotta do homework to see what my options are and how to play it. Might be a head hunter this year...

Re: WA multi season draw...
No on either. Anybody here wonder about the last 15 years? First we choose a weapon, then archery loses the right to hunt the rut, then we choose a side of the state, then we lose the right to harvest mature bulls unless we draw ( maybe once every 9 years to one in a life time, then archery loses the right to harvest cows in many units, loss of lots of access, and I am sure there are lots of other opportunity losses, all while hunter participation numbers are plummenting. As a favor they let us all put in for a spring bear hunt, with only a few tags and not that great of results in most units (even though there is enough bear to justify two tags in the fall?) and let us trip all over ourselves and pay to possibly get back the right we all just tried to draw. I know habitat has been declining and timber practices are changing, but I think something else must be going on. Why do I say this, because each year I, while I am seeing a larger percentage of bulls, I am seeing less and less animals. Anybody care to comment, or should I just have opened a new thread?

Re: WA multi season draw...
If you're talking elk in eastern Wa, the management plan calls for a reduction in the population. So if you're seeing less animals but more bulls that would make sense. It's kind of hard to support many elk when virtually all their winter range has been converted to other uses. Now on the west side, less clearcuts and no fires, means less feed and habitat for elk. Then there is the hair loss syndrome that has greatly reduced blacktail deer populations, an increase in cougar and bear populations, and more private land off limits to hunting. Mule deer right now are doing really well, although after this winter I'm waiting to see if that is still true. There's my comments...not sure what exactly it is that you think is "going on?"

Re: WA multi season draw...
Washington Hunter - I bow hunt Eastern Washington, so that could be a reason I am seeing less animals. Also, with the closing of roads and the lack of cow hunting in the adjoining areas, there is probably more pressure in the areas I hunt, which is pushing the animals out. It may be that they are there part of the year, and are just hunkering down in inaccessable areas during the season. What my biggest concern is about is the lack of opportunity compared to the past in relation to the number of hunters.
I am really not sure what I think is going on but I feel there are a few things that could change that would help us all.
1. In some areas I think the Native Americans took a few more elk than they should have. I am not saying that they are taking huge numbers, but rather that they took enough of a possibly depressed herd to push it over. If you look at the tribal numbers the Northwest Treaty Tribes will say they only took a one percent of the elk state wide, but a closer look shows they only include only the western Treaty Tribes, and do not appear to include animals taken on reservation. In the areas they do have treaty rights to, they often take the majority of the total elk taken, often time havesting cows, mature bulls, or spikes, even though all normal hunts may be restricted. These hunts often take place late in the year when the elk are more vulnerable, creating higher takes than hunting earlier in the year. When these areas are experience higher numbers of predators and habitat loss, the take can really hurt a small area, which then pushes pressure on other areas. My main thought here is on the pennisula. My brother-in-law is a treaty member, so I know a small amount about their seasons. Even for them, his tribe have gone from being able to party hunt for any elk to bull only (I think it may even be spike only). Until the last year or two, he would shot one or more elk (usually cows) each year. The area is severally depressed now. While it has a lot to do with habitat and predators, the extreme pressure from tribes in the small area they hunt really appears to have made a bad situation worse.
2. In areas like Kapowsin, the herds may be there, but the state is allowing the timber company to conduct what amounts to their own trophy hunts. I don't know much about the population of elk in the areas, but the permits are low enough that I would think the area is probably being under hunted. Just by limiting the numbers of hunters, it will increase the pressure other areas. Add in new areas of permit hunting only, like in the Mount Saint Helens area, and you decrease the take there, and increase pressure other areas.
3. By allowing larger numbers of damage control hunts and AHE hunts the state apparently must restrict other hunting methods in areas of Eastern Washington.
4. The lack of hound hunting is increasing predator takes.
5. The state may need to start putting restrictions on the use of herbacides if it is shown that the wildlife is truely suffering.
6. Each year, more owners are restricting access to there land for a number of reasons. The problem becomes inflated when the owners block of access through their land to state land or federal land. This may help elk in some areas, but also has increased pressure in others. I may be extreme, but I feel that when a owner is getting property tax reductions for timber land, these reductions could easily be tied in with accessability to their land. For example, if a land owner wants to cut off all access, then the reduction is reduced. With exemptions for smaller parcels of land, active logging and such, this could provide incentive to open up a lot of land that is being closed off.
so, I guess what I think is happening, is a lot of things that together are really hurting overall opportunity.

My brother and I both drew the deer tag. Neither of us got the elk tag. My dad didn't get either. He was [petunias!]...
