How about ocean salmon?
Any one fishing the ocean this time of year? Since the rains and the tides haven't seemed to be bringing the fish into the rivers was wondering if maybe the ocean might be the place to try. Bouy reports at stonewall have looked fairly swell the last couple of days (c; forecast not real promising tho'. Would really appreciate any info / tips as I'm thinking about making a foray tomorrow (sunday) out of newport. Heard a rumor regarding an aquaculture facility in yaquina bay that is anticipating a 300,000 fish return. Seems like maybe the rumor mill may have added a few extra zeros, but was hoping maybe someone had some accurate info on this (Wak'm ?).
Fished Alsea yesterday a.m., know of six fish caught between cozy cove and taylors, 4 on bobbers, other two trolling, none by me! Three fish caught at the bar. pretty slow.

Re: How about ocean salmon?
Here is the latest, Yes there is a run into the old Oraqua sight. This is the first returns of fish that were netted in the big elk and were raised at the salmon river hatchery and released from south beach. It consisted of 100,000 chinook smolts. Now how many come back. Your guess is as good as mine ,I think 2% maybe a good figure. THe odfw worked with local help to put it together to remove some of the fishing pressure from up stream to the lower river.
These are from native fish and are finclipped. I hope they work out.
There are some fish being caught on the beach by the ladder and by the Natural Gas tank. Some have done well up river while others have fish for 5 days without a hit. One boat had 3 in 2 hours and one was 40#.
If the weather stays down I may run to the pile this week, there are still fish there. One boat limited Tues. on fish over 20#, these are next years springers and nice fish. They were just mooching on the south end.
Today the ocean is flat but you can't see 200 yrds because of fog. Don't forget your GPS.
Good luck

Re: How about ocean salmon?
Wak'm,
Thanks for the info. Gonna give it a whirl if I can round up an intrepid soul to join me. A friend is (was) fishing with marshal's guide service today around the gas plant, will post the results when I get the info.

Re: How about ocean salmon?
I had the boat hooked up and planned to go to the pile at daylight, but I see a bit of a change in the ocean and think I best wait. It will probably be next now,I will head for the river the next 2 days. I wander how your friend did.
Good luck

Re: How about ocean salmon?
Never did find that intrepid soul, looks like maybe it was for the best. Looks like conditions degenerated. Has to be VERY nice for me to go outside the jetty in my 19' N. River. Will post the news about the guided trip here when I get the info.

Re: How about ocean salmon?
Here's the skinny on the guided trip:
no fish caught, no fish seen caught, abysmal failure. trolled the jaws, around the gas plant. Nada. Guides wife apparently went around to the launches and stores along the alsea and heard tell of 3 fish caught there. this is all on sat. Had conversations with a couple different fella's today. One was of the opinion that the yaquina run tends to be a little later than the alsea. the other guy had a friend that caught three friday on the alsea using some sort of green kwikfish. Like uncle dean used to say, "The fish are where you find them, and not where you don't." He also used to say that garage sales drew people like flies to a magnet go figure. Post any success stories pleez!
