Default Newport/ Anyone get out today?

With a 5 and 1 at 9 for tomorrow, I got Almost Perfect ready to pound on some bottom dwellers in the AM. Anyone get out today and if so how was it? Anyone know if there were any restrictions today? I may have an open seat due to a "I'll call ya back after a talk to momma".

Thanks.

Yes, we went out today--for a while. The folks with more sense got past the tips, turned around, and went back home. It was very bouncy, large wind waves out of the south after about 7:30 a.m. When we went out there was no restriction on the bar, but I think there was later as the USCG was calling an outbound rec vessel as I was inbound.

I couldn't make more than 3.5 to 4 knots going sounth, so we went south at about 2 knots or just over trolling and then drifted back north. This was the earliest I've ever come back in and it was due to the conditions. I kept hoping the conditions would improve, but they didn't as of 11:30 and it was still blowing pretty hard when I caome back over the bridge about 1:30 or so. I didn't even put mp crab pots in as I wasn't sure I'd be able to find the buoys when it was time to pull them.

My dad and the albamarle fished today. They said it was pretty choppy. Seal rock and back, 2 fish.

We were ready to drive west from Corvallis....and Walter called from out on the water (on the Miss Raven). His words were..... "if you are looking for a relaxing day on the water, this isn't it". We had our hearts set on going a ways offshore for salmon & deepwater lings, so we cancelled.

We of the Earlybird went out and it was not a pretty site. 5 knots max....took an hour to get to south reef. Took a bit of water over the front a few times and had to back off a bit. Not unsafe conditions, just a very bouncy ride.

The fish are there though.....we got 4 ling and 22 bass between 4 of us but it was very tough fishing, not for the faint of heart.

If I had not taken a vacation day I would have turned around and bagged it. 2-3 knot drift.....trolling for bass was good.LOL

Got the deck washed down good though....

5 and 1 at 9 turned out to be 4 and 3 at 5 seconds at times....came in at 11:00 and not a bit too soon.

We pulled 4 of 5 pots for 3 keepers (lots of females)
This is the worst crabbing I have ever seen....but I know they are somewhere.
Definantly bumpy....I was to pooped out to pull the last one, 60 pound pots are hard on this old man pulling solo.

Maybe tomorrow...

I think the comercials need to have limits. Last year they had a bumper year and this year nobody is doing much at all. Hmmmm makes you think

I fished out of Depot. Definetly not the weather or seas that we were expecting. I got 6 blacks and 1 ling before heading back in. Had an interesting entrance to the hole but thats a story for another thread...

We were out today to get the pots...damn, they didn't get any lighter. Even the OSP asked how we pulled them big buggers.
Well...5 crabs ....arg!

So went and caught a few lings, and assorted for dinner,
Beautiful today....what a difference a day makes.

They crabbed this year pretty deep, 40 fathoms. Lots of pots still off shore...I wonder if they aren't still out there a ways.

Passed the Miss Raven heading out.
Definitely not a bluebird day as the plans to go to Seal Rock changed in a hurry.
We got 17 blacks and 2 lings yesterday. Passed up on the limit after we took a couple over the bow.
Jim the Painter has one ocean pot still about 1.5 miles N of the jetty in 72 feet of water. If someone would pluck it for him he I'm sure he would appreciate it. PM me if someone will be out there in the next few days and can retrieve the trap.
StickFish,
VHF worked fine...now if I can get the mike back from Jim

We went out today (Monday) also. We went to Newport, got the CG on the radio to check for restrictions on the bar; sure nuf - 21' and under restricted. So we took my 20'er up to Depot Bay and caught 14 black bass and a MONSTER Ling before we ran out of tackle. The drift was so bad that once you hooked the bottom, you couldn't get it free. One guy on the boat broke his brand new pole in two places and another chumed half the time out there in the maytag washing machine. There was four in the boat.

What exactly does "restricted" mean? I'm not familiar with the bar but hope to start gaining some experience on it this summer in my 22' boat. At 22' I'd squeak by that restriction but just how hairy would it be?

Basically, if they restrict the bar 21 feet and under you probably don't want to go out in a 22 footer. Splitting hairs is not a good choice here. Play safe, I have seen the bar restricted and it looks flat as a pancake. But I figure the Good ol Boys are playing it safe and tring to keep us all safe. So I follow their advice, I may not agree, but this is their home field to play in.

You can always call the station and ask questions.

Not always...I've been on the bar when it was restricted to 21 and you could have taken a canoe with a beer sitting on the gunnel and not spilled a drop.

A lot of people sit in the bay and say the bar looks fine but in reality it's a lot hairier than it looks. I've certainly done it myself many times but I sure wish there would be more consistency. Sometimes it seems like common sense goes out the window just to error on the side of caution

Well I suppose they have to draw the line somewhere (21' in this case). Just for argument's sake, at what size does it become "safe" to cross? I mean 23' is only 1' longer than 22' and 24' is only 1' longer than 23', etc. etc.

I'm sure for something like this local knowledge is king. Since I don't have that I'll be taking it slow to start with at any of the bars. Where I do have experience (Florida) the inlets are not that bad in general but there can still be some pretty nasty seas. I've been out fishing many times in a 23' boat in 8' seas during a small craft advisory and if we had asked the coast guard (God bless em) I'm sure they would have said to stay home. Just being in a sea worthy boat, taking it easy and keeping the nose into any real nasty waves made for what I felt were safe trips.

That is the question of the day my friend. The only real answer is to be on the bar with your eye on her. Like mentioned before, I have seen her restricted to 21' and under when I would have been comfortable taking a 16' open bow ski boat across. Then again, I have also seen the bar restricted to 18' and under when you could only make 8 knots or so and end up turning around cause your getting bounced around everywhere.

You just gotta be there to see for yourself
