Barley pop?
I do some homebrew. Lately I've been enjoying an arrogant bas.... ale after a long day at work.
Anyone want to share thier brew of choice. Bonus points to one packaged in a homebrew friendly bottle.

Re: Barley pop?
Lately I've been digging on the new Widmer Broken Halo IPA.
Mine happens to be loaded in a 7.5 gallon keg, but it also comes in 12oz. Long Necks.
I've got a couple cases of 24oz homebrew bottles and three cases of 12oz home brew bottles - I've not brewed in a long long time. My fav was a Oatmeal Stout I used to make with dark malt extract a pound of black patent and a pound of choclate malt, lots of hopps - than dry hopp the finish.

Re: Barley pop?
I like the Arrogant Bastige as well as most of Stone Brewing's beer. Their Double Bast.. is FANTASTIC. Ruination IPA and Old Guardian Barleywine are both winners as well. Great little brewery in northern San Diego...very glad distribution makes it this far north!

Re: Barley pop?
Google "Mirror Pond clone" It's a typical American Pale Ale. About 80-90% 2 row base malt with some 20-40L crystal for color and body. Hopped with lots of Chinook and Cascade hops for bittering and finishing, and fermented with a neutral yeast like Wyeast 1056.

Re: Barley pop?
Rogue Brewery's DEAD GUY ALE is my current favorite among the 'heavies'.
And my favorite place to drink it is fresh from the tap, out on the pier, at the new place they just opened on the Astoria waterfront, adjacent to the East End Mooring Basin.

Re: Barley pop?
Striper Clubs Stone Ruination IPA is wonderful, along with Lagunitas IPA and a real sleeper out there, BJ's (pizza) Irvington IPA!
Anyone a fan of Rogue's Brutal Bitter?

Re: Barley pop?
I've had a few Buzzsaws. It's no Mirror Pond or Black Butte but it's good. I've always been fond of Deschutes' offerings.
I've given some thought to homebrewing but I doubt supply could keep up with demand. Thinking about going the kegerator route. What's the going rate on a keg of whatever Deschutes is putting out?

Re: Barley pop?
Just finished off a very tasty bock that I brewed in January; a mirror Pond clone should be really easy to do. 5 lb extract, 3 lb 2-row pale malt, hops of choice, and a good liquid yeast should do it. My favorite IPA is by Terminal Gravity out of Enterprise, Walking Man in Stevenson, WA has the tastiest Imperial IPA; 10% and 100 IBU's of hops-Homo Erectus- celebrating 2 million years of walking erect! And try Laurelwood's beers, more awards than anyone else, and they will fill 5 gal cornie kegs, too.

Re: Barley pop?
Oh yeah, I forgot about Yeungling's(sp). "Ying Ling's" is how it is pronounced...had it in NY/NJ last year and loved it...will have to look for some here.
I also second the Lagunita's IPA--not bad! The Deschutes Buzzsaw is good as well, but I am partial to the Obsidian Stout.
BJ's Pizza makes excellent brews as well. They also have a 'Cask Night' which is Thursday (at least at the one in Woodland Hills, CA). My favorite from BJ's is the Pirahna Pale Ale.
And of course....
Terminator Stout(You all know who brews this) --love the stuff.

Re: Barley pop?
Barrels are the units used to measure brewery capacity. A barrel is 31 gallons. "Standard" size kegs are 15 1/2 gallons and are also know as 1/2 barrel kegs. Pony kegs are 7 1/4 gallons AKA 1/4 barrels.

Re: Barley pop?
Nice to see all the homebrewers out there!
It's been over a year since my last batch, but I found an Alaskan Amber clone that was probably the best drinking brew I've had.
Homebrewing is pretty easy, but the wait is VERY difficult.

Re: Barley pop?
I usually just try to make a hoppy pale ale for home use. I've been bad at keeping up with homebrew, all the stuff is buried in the garage again.
I've been partial to the Full Sail IPA lately, Deschutes just came out with "Inversion IPA" it's like 6.8% alcohol, which is nearly too strong. Nearly.

What is that place in Tigard? Liquid Solutions or something... I hear they are a pretty good resource. In fact, I may start brewing again if I can find the space!

Re: Barley pop?
Liquid Solutions is on Scholls Ferry. They have a massive selection of beer, imports and domestic. No homebrew supplies though.
Above the Rest is a homebrew supply store on 99w and Hall in Tigard. The lady that runs the place is REALLY weird, but they have a good selection of supplies.

Re: Barley pop?
No worries Steve. I drink lots of commercial beer when I'm getting in the mood to brew. It helps me figure out how to tweak my recipes.

Re: Barley pop?
Pearl,
Not to worry, I still drink the commercial brews in the summer months. It's just a taste I was exposed to while stationed over in Europe that fits this time of year.

Re: Barley pop?
To make a good hefe like Widmers, you need to use the proper yeast, so next time you brew a wheat, go to your local brew pub and fill a couple of quarts with Hefe (ask them to shake the keg first for the most yeast), use one for your yeast and drink the other.

Re: Barley pop?
Hefeweizens are not filtered. Widmer has a special yeast that doesn't want to settle out. That, along with the wheat proteins are what make Widmer hefe so cloudy. If you did want to harvest the yeast from widmer hefe, or any bottle conditioned craft beer, you will have to learn to culture yeast in order to grow enough to pitch into a 5 gallon batch. It's kind of an advanced technique for a beginner.

Re: Barley pop?
Actually, it's the same as krausning. The abundance of yeast cells in a quart of Hefe usually kicks in less that 12 hours. I've used two quarts to start 14 gal batches, so I figure that a quart should be about right for a 5 gal. batch. One of my brewing buddies likes to let it sit in the keg for three weeks before tapping, and the yeast setties out and the beer is nice and clear. With all the hombrewers here, we should think about some ifish beer!
