Default SHEEP!!!! It's what's for dinner

It's always great to enjoy the animals you are lucky enough to harvest. I love how everytime you sit down for dinner you get to relive the moments of the hunt. Tonight was one of those nights as the dall sheep steaks hit the barbecue. Can't wait until the next delicious trip down memory lane.

Question: What does Dall sheep taste like? Any game flavor? I'm guessing almost like pork chops? BH

I never thought Dall sheep had a strong flavor. It's pretty mild tasting and is considered the best game meat by many people up here. But then everybody has their own tastes.

In Alaska it's generally regarded as the best tasting game meat of all our critters. If you ever get to try some, don't take it for granted. After carrying a 100+ pound pack many miles out of the mountains, most sheep hunters are loathe to share any of their "white gold." A mature ram only yields approx. 60 lbs of meat.

We had it one night right along some venison. Sheep meat tastes much better, no comparison.

I've read lots of accounts that wild sheep is awesome. Some of the old accounts of hunters early in the last century said it was the meat they prefered above all others in Alaska.

I've never eaten Dall but got a steak off an 8yr old Nelson's from here in Oregon and it was very good.

My dad used to tell me that the reason that meat taste bad is because of the way it is handled in the field. I make sure that the animal is field dressed as soon as possible. I have made many trips back to camp early just to get the animal taken care of. Only once have i had any meat that was "bad". I'm sure that there are reasons beyond human control that contribute to "wild or gamey" taste, but a little time at camp can possible save many good tastful dinners.
